Surely we can all agree that: - Pac has superior handspeed and footspeed. - Pac has the workrate and stamina of a horse. - Pac has the chin of a f*cking rhino. - Pac has power in BOTH hands. Now although he is fundamentally flawed on tons of other things, I don't get why people can't appreciate: - His lead left counter to the jab. C'MON. Let's forget about the other cherry picks. How about just Cotto and JMM? Weren't you able to see how perfectly he timed both fighters, almost forcing 'em both to abandon the jab at some point? - His counter right hook (and yes, even the "roll under" afterwards). One word: HATTON. - His feints. JMM and Morales both acknowledged them. Iron chinned Mosley got drop because of it. Why his feints are always underrated here is beyond me. I honestly believe these three are a thing of beauty in the way Pac uses them, even against technicians such as JMM.
He's a beast mid-range fighter. He's a WW Tyson. He's got flaws like any fighter. Name me a fighter I'll pick apart his flaws.
No love for his strengths? He's been on a love train for about three years, at least, and rightfully so. Now that he's had a fairly ****ing debatable decision and doesn't look like more than just a man, people are concentrating more on his flaws, as every fighter has. It was bound to happen.
I'm not referring to how *******s make him a demi-god. I'm thinking more about how those more "unbiased" posters refute the fact that Pac does know how to throw a punch and not just a mindless beast that they make him out to be. But yeah, i get the whole "picking him apart" situation going on, I just sincerely believe that when he retires for good, he will have one of the best counter lead left and right hook in the history of the sport. Possibly one of the best southpaws ever as well.
What strengths? His defense? His footwork? His technique? His infighting? I don't see these strengths you talk about. No, Pacquiao's an amazing fighter. He can do some things in the ring that virtually no one else can. His explosiveness, handspeed, footspeed, straight left, warrior mentality (among many other things) have taken him from poverty to boxing immortality. The accomplishments speak for themselves.
I said: 1. Lead left. 2. Right hook. 3. Feints. They are grossly underrated around here. I also said TONS of flaws. And yeah, thank you for proving my/this thread's point.
"(among many other things)" - like some of the things you mentioned, perhaps? Didn't see the need to repeat what you wrote. The counters to the jab are a product of great timing on that punch. He looked to be at his peak during the Cotto fight.
I think he's been going steadily downhill since then. Nothing unbelievably huge, but his technique, footspeed, and handspeed haven't been at quite the same level since he fought Cotto. This isn't being brought up because of his struggles with Marquez, or an attempt to discredit Marquez. Even against Margarito, I thought the footspeed and explosiveness/spring in his step wasn't what it once was. Physically, the De La Hoya, Hatton, and Cotto fights were probably the peak Pacquiao at the higher weights.
I'll also say that you don't have to be a fan of Pacquiao and you don't even have to like him as a fighter, but if you don't appreciate what he brings to the sport and do everything to discredit and diminish his ability and accomplishments (which some posters are certainly guilty of), you're not a true fan of the sport.
