I personally am not a Micheal Nunn fan. But i do think he was a formidable opponent. He had a great chin and was slick as can be and watching him in the ring could be as annoying as Leonard. This is not my favorite style but I know it is so with ESB fans so I was wondering why isnt he more popular? It's almost as tho he gets branded as a loser
I liked Nunn. I always liked guys that threw good combos and he was a tall ass middleweight at 6'3. Hes definitley not just a formidable opponent.
Thank you lefhook. I have always tried to emulate Mike's style as a fighter whenever I pretend to be a fighter in my mind, as I was inspired by his performance in the Kalambay fight. Mike certainly seemed to have it all down as a fighter when he was younger and was a worthy successor to Hagler.
At his best Nunn was pretty awesome.. At his worst many fans were turned off by him as he would tend to slap and get on his bike. He fought out of the LA are for most of his career and i seen him fight at the Reseda club once, but you never knew which version you were gonna get. In my opinion i thought he looked unbeateable against Frank Tate. I like that Nunn against almost anyone in a HTH matchup. Maybe even against RJJ
Because Nunn never had the grit. He was a slick soft wanna be Ali dancing around. Also he never got any love from the East Coast. Not taking anything away from him, he was great but you kinda knew that when someone gives him problems he wouldnt have the mental fortitude to comeback, and this was proven when Toney knocked his ass. Same with Curry..Talented but mentally not the strongest
Agreed. He struck me as slick, but fragile. His build was not conducive to strength and durability and I will always believe that the KO of Kalambay was an anomaly for both of them. Their weren't many fans on the east coast also because of his silly Hollywood connections. I found him to be obnoxious, but then again I found Whitaker to be even more personally obnoxious than Nunn. I was a happy boy when Toney clocked him. After that, I started to become a fan and was hoping against hope that Jones would have met him at SMW. http://www.secondsout.com/usa-boxing-news?ccs=229&cs=19968
I was a Michael Nunn fan...I followed his defenses and was really blown away by his powerful ko of Sumbu Kalambay in one round, and I was saddened that he lost to James Toney as well...but it's sheer gibberish..bull**** to rate him in the elite of middleweight history and try to say that he would have beaten Monzon or Hagler, anything like that..he should be appreciated of course, but not be the subject of revisionism to make him any better than he was.
Im sure his drug use had a lot to do with his downfall. Toney's late round KO was spectacular and probably a big turning point in his career. He didnt seem to have it against the better fighters after that.
i still can't believe that steve little of all ppl knocked him down and took that super middleweight title from him :bart
Supposedly he was an on and off drug user from the time he was a teen. Wouldn't doubt it personally. I'm a pretty big Nunn fan, by the way. Always liked his fight up at SMW against Ashley.
To be honest, I never found Nunn to be a very exciting fighter. Sure, his one punch KO of Kalambay was as picturesque as they come, but the vast majority of the fights that I've seen him in, I was not impressed by. Marlon Starling vs Michael Nunn had to be the worst fight I ever watched growing up form an action standpoint. I've seen pillow fights between college girls where harder blows were thrown...
You haven't watched his fight with Tate then? ...Nunn is remembered for what he was, wasted potential. He was not a great champion, he had two flawless elite performances, and anyone saying he got lucky against Kalambay is discrediting a perfectly thrown counter left hook. He was epic against Tate. Nunn had an array of terrible performances after the Kalambay win though.
