No, did not see the Tate fight, but didn't like the several fights that I did see.. Not saying Nunn wasn't a great fighter.. I just never cared to spend a saturday night watching him..
Completely understandable. I'll upload the Tate fight for your benefit, after I do the Qawi/Spinks fight this weekend.
Magoo once addie sends you that Tate fight i promise that you will be impressed with Nunn one of the most dominating and awesome performances in the last 25 years in my opinion.
Even Jesse Reid, one of the best cornermen in history in my opinion, couldn't help Tate out that night. He was outclassed in every area.
It all went downhill for him after the Kalambay win. Sometimes I think he would have been better off had that fight gone past the first round. Kalambay had all the moves and could have made it a very tough night for Nunn, instead the fight was over inside the first round and Nunn seemed to get complacent for the rest of his reign. He was content on doing just enough.
I think he was a guy that suffered when he tried going away from his natural style and becoming more fan friendly. All of a sudden the guy is going toe to toe with roldan and he sure didn't have to fight that way. He could've done his safety first thing and retreated and jabbad away at the guy to win rounds. He's in there trying to back the guy up. Same with the Barkley fight. He fights like he wants to outbrawl Iran Barkley. And no foot movement and hanging out on the ropes letting a guy like Barkley just bang away. Goosen was not a big powerhouse promoter at that time and my guess is they wanted a more entertaining fan friendly guy in there to sell the networks on for a multi--fight deal. And that guy was a far cry from the version of Nunn that fought Frank Tate & those dominating bouts prior to Tate. In those, the guy simply didn't lose rounds and was extremely difficult to hit. 2 years later, different ballgame and all of a sudden the guy's in there trying to back everyone up and trading.
I liked a lot of what he brought to the table, but probably disliked even more. He was a physical specimen, with great combinations at his best, and a strong body puncher. However, defensively he relied almost solely on reflexes, and when he got on his bike he'd have given Lance Armstrong a run for his money. He just seemed a guy that would've posed problems a lot more for his physical attributes than for his technical skills, which were often lacking in certain aspects.
I do feel that he was an extraordinarily gifted fighter and athlete. As I said before, I wasn't always entertained by some of his fights, but that takes nothing away from his ability to beat world class opponents. His jab, footwork, and technical ability was as good as anyone's, and on occasion, he could even bang when he had to. Its a shame that he couldn't finish what started as a remarkable performance against James Toney.. He was boxing beautifully before Toney cought him late.
