    Stevie,

    Agree on Bill Recht 11-4-0,,,,,,,a little wide.

    But, Artie Aidala was New York's premier Boxing Judge.
    The best by far, and extremely fair.
    His 9-6-0 in rounds was about as good as you can get.

    But even Artie said after the fight,,,,,what was deceiving about the
    scoring, is New York used a round system.
    If this was a 10-point must system, he would have scored both the
    11th and 15th rounds 10-8 for Joe Frazier.
    Or 144 - 139

    I scored it 9-4-2, so I can see how 11-4 is reasonable, or 9-6. Both those scores are close to mine.

    But I've noticed with the scoring of this fight that the specific rounds differ greatly, people tend to have greatly different cards. Funnily enough, Frazier still always comes out the winner. (Apart from a small few zealots who have Ali somehow winning !).

    Un,

    I love Arthur Mercante,,,,,,,,,but sometimes he gets a liitle extra credit for being the
    greatest referee and scoring expert.

    But, I'm sure not too many people know, he scored the 9th Round, by far Ali's best round
    in which he hurt Joe,,,,,,,,,,for Frazier.

    He also had the 12th Round Even, when both Aidala and Recht had it for Frazier.

    I think most people had it at 4-4-1 thru 9 Rounds, 'dead even', then as Frazier said,
    'then Joe took over, move over Rover'

    Frazier -Ali I

    Arthur Mercante;
    A-A-F-F-F,,,A-A-F-F-A,,,F-E-F-A-F

    Artie Aidala;
    A-A-F-F-F,,,F-F-F-A-A,,,F-F-A-A-F

    Bill Recht;
    F-A-F-F-A,,,F-F-F-A-F,,,F-F-F-A-F

    Bizarre, but the only rounds that all (3) agreed on Ali winning was the 2nd and 14th.
    For Frazier, it was the 3, 4, 8, 11 and 15.

    In defense of Mercante, he did say Joe Frazier was the more purposeful fighter for more than 3/4 of the 9th round,
    and that Ali was only dominant in the last 30-seconds.

    Artie Aidala, said Frazier was so dominant from the 3rd thru the 12th rounds, except for the last 30-seconds of the 9th and 10th round, that he was looking to give Ali a close round, even though he may not have won it, like the 13th.

    I actually talked to Billy Aird on the phone once,though I never met him. I was out for a drink one night,and a mate of mine,knowing I like boxing,commented that Billy worked with him so he got him on the phone for me. I asked him how the hell he lost to John L Gardner. Billy admitted he did n't train as hard as he should have done.

    ? I think this was one of the periods with the most HW talent. You had of course Frazier, but also Ellis, Quarry and Mathis. These were all talented fighters. Then you also had Mac Foster and Bonavena plus older but still very good schemers like Patterson. Concerning up and coming talent it seems comparable to the early 80's to me.

    Future and growing talent.
    But on the marketability scene, a little light.

    Virtually nobody knew who Leotis Martin was, even ABC who broadcasted those
    WBA Elimination Fights, and the guy was 25-1-0.

    How did a man koed in 8 rounds deserve a rematch losing nearly every round ? He didn't deserve it til he earned it ,Ali owed him nothing til he earned it , George took 18 months off and fell down the rankings ,when he became the mandatory the fight was on ,the champ has a year to face his mandatory or be stripped ,the camps where in negotiations Foremans camp demanded 5 million equal purse ,he was offered 3 so whilst they where haggling he took the Young fight as a warmup and lost and retired ,he really didn't want any parts of Ali again or he would have took the 3.
    Joe vowed to make Ali suffer whilst not being champ ,Ali was the number 1 challenger for 2-3 years ,joe should have been stripped ,eventually under pressure from sanctioning bodies he signed for the #2 Foreman for less money than an Ali fight ,not a smart move ,done out of pettiness ,bitterness and stupidity.
    Also could have fought Foreman earlier than he did but Foreman told him no warm up fight ,but Ali took the second Norton fight ,so the offer was pulled

    First ever post, no agenda there!!!!!

    Tell me how many months there are between the 30/10/74 and the 24/01/76? Quite shockingly it isn't a trick question.

    Knocking out two of the top 5 contenders back to back sure gets one some mileage but Ali was certainly in no hurry to fight Foreman and it was well noted back then.

    You make some interesting points about Frazier if true.

    I was hanging out in a saloon in Arizona once, and in comes Duce. Dude made a really stand-out picture, bespectacled and asking for coffee? Well, this dude came up, he was strapped, dangerous, and mocking Dooch, for the glasses, for ordering the coffee, for his fancy Daniel clothery, all of it. And the Doozle didn't give him any chance to draw his pistols and just swatted out both fists and in one fell swoop, he straight up KO'd that guy, man. Anyway, he is missed.
