I think this is important. I'm sure that Hatton is still quite popular in the U.K., as well as having superior U.S. recognizablity in relation to better pound-for-pound fighters, both American and foreign. However, on ESB there has been a noticeable erosion in vocal fanhood for Hatton since Mayweather and, less importantly, Lazcano. Considering that these two shared a card in May in which each performed poorly, it is not surprising that this is not generating a great deal of hype. Yet, it is a significant fight. Hatton is the lineal champion at junior welterweight and Malignaggi is almost universally regarded as the #1 contender in the division. Anytime a bout occurs with those general features, it is important.
Well, let's be honest, Paulie aint exactly P4P No1 Mayweather Jr is he? Mayweather was the fight Ricky had built up to all his career, in the end he got a little over-excited and little bit stupid and got himself KO'd but it was still one of the biggest boxing events in recent years. I think this will be a very tough fight for Hatton, maybe with an upset on the cars but lets not kid ourselves that this is anything more than a pre-cursor to a fight with DLH or Pacquiao next year.
Isn't that why this should be really important? Not only in terms of the division, where its a hugely relevant fight, but for Hatton its massive. If he wins he likely gets mega fights with Hoya/Pac/Marquez if he loses its time to take up darts full-time.
Wooo! Seriously, don't get too overconfident. Paulie is not a world beater by any means. But honesty speaking, Hatton looked shot in his last fight - the worst I've ever seen him look. I think Paulie has just enough to squeak out a close decision. Why is that so impossible?
I would offer you an avater bet but I already have one with Pauliemayweather that lasts until Jan 1st 2010.
Like I said, the fight is going to be close. It could go to either fighter. Would it shock me if Hatton won? Of course not. But Hatton fans should equally be reserved about the good possibility of a Malignaggi upset. The only wagering I'll do will be Vegas. Thanks but no thanks.
I look at this as a very difficult fight to call. However, I would be astonished if Hatton were able to stop Malignaggi.
Good point. If Cotto couldn't stop a broken jaw Malignaggi, what makes people think a depleted Hatton is going to steamroll Paulie? Still haven't received a solid explanation as to why other than Ricky Hatton can do it because he's Ricky Hatton.
