why not have fights on regular tv?

Before the biggest fights were on PPV, they were on closed circuit.

PPV is better than closed circuit IMO.

What would really help boxing, especially in the states, is if the semi-big fights (which are on HBO and Showtime nowadays) were on network TV, like it was largely in the late 70s and early 80s. Some people have said it became harder for boxing to get sponsors after the Mancini-Kim tragedy.

Ask a promoter. Promoters are idiots turning boxing into a niche sport. I think X games gets more air time than Boxing. Sad.

 

Ali-Spinks II was on Network tv, along with 3 other title fights from New Orleans. 80 million people tuned in to watch. It can be done, promoters are just too greedy.

 

I understand that fights on network tv are a pipe dream, but just to play devil's advocate I'd like to argue with ya a littl ebit here (all in good spirits, of course)

Even if a fight is short, the boxing show will still have time to put commercials on. Commercials during fights take 11 minutes during the fight, and maybe 2-3 while they are doing the cards. So, you have 13 minutes. I'm sure announcers can find some bs to talk about for 13 minutes so the advertisers get there commercials shown, aibiet, maybe not during the actual fight.

Also, While I don't think every fight should be on ppv, I do think I would miss the time between rounds, like hearing the corners, and seeing replays of big moments. However, I do understand that boxing on network can't work with out commercials during the minute breaks.

On second thought, I really didn't say too much that disagreed with your thoughts, lol.

 

Any idea if there is a list floating around of fights that were on the fox series? I remember the Tyson fight, but I really don't remember too many other fights...but again this was JUST before I got into boxing in a big way.

Thanks for any help, I would like to see the production quality, and maybe the Hops fight.

There were also only 3 (ABC, NBC, CBS) channels back then, too.

Way too much competition for viewers now.
