Calzaghe was offered a fight with Jones and turned it down. I think that its pretty clear that Joe wouldnt have taken the fight with Jones unless he was sure that Jones was faded.
That's been his MO for his entire career. I'd bet my life he wouldn't have fought Eubank when he did if he had any choice in the matter as Eubank was only slightly over the hill and weight drained, not totally shot to ****.
Pavlik was offered a fight with Calzaghe and turned it down. I think that its pretty clear that kelly wouldnt have taken the fight with calzaghe unless he was sure that calzaghe was faded. kelly would have had to have moved up in weight /traveled abroad /took small money and been a big underdog . as a pavlik fan this would have been a stupid move in hindsight for his career. or do you beleive pavlik should have taken the fight 2 years ago when he was relativley unknown v calzaghe ?
Yeah but will that work though? That's the question. Years later we don't give Rocky Marciano "credit" for beating a washed-up Joe Louis. I'm not sure the out-of-prime-picks gambit will actually work in the long run.
Yeah I mean you can't say it's anything but the intelligent move to make though, can you? Had he come to the US he would likely have had a few L's on his ledger -- and we all know the importance in marketing that almighty "0". While F. Warren is usually deplored by fans (perhaps correctly so) you can't say he doesn't do the right thing by his fighters, monetary-wise. After all, it's those dudes that take the big hits. Not like we'd give a **** about Joe if he got beaten multiple times and his career ended up :dead
Let's see some proof that this offer was made, and let's see the details. Up to this point it's just Joe claiming he offered Pavlik a fight back when Kelly's best win was over Fulgencio Zuniga, another unknown prosepct.
Why is this even worthy of a thread? Every man, woman and child on this planet knows exactly why now and why not then.
no i mean its a Really intelligent move by joe, if he went to america he would have loses on his record because they would of called for a match against roy jones the public (even though most of us fight fans would keep him in high respect for taking on such challenges), but staying in europe fighting loads of mandatorys and raking up records which stand next to joe louis (title defences) and B HOP (years of been champ) becoming unkown to america nobody new him so build yourself up to be the best fighter in europe with this great champion record then take on some american legends (when there really old) and retire claiming yourself to be one of the greatest, it is actully great way to secure your legacy as 1 of the greatest but as a fight fan i will never hold him in such high regards as legends such as Duran, Sugar Ray Leonard, but in 30 years time all people will see is his records and wins of hopkins and jones (more than likely) and that will be enough to make future fans to think he is one of the legends
i was rebutting hudson that calzaghe turned down roy jones with a similar fighter as an example. i then went on to defend pavlik as to why he did not need the fight for that small money and giving away so many advantages. as to your post it was american tv HBO that wanted pavlik when there preferred opponent alan green had a poor performance v mccary and he was dropped from the pecking order. pavliks name was in the frame for about a week before his manager said no. as to the timeline you can look it up, it was in the 1st or 2nd week after mccary v green whenever that fight took place. sorry not trying to sideline your question and proof but it will take a bit of time to trawl through the webpages to find something on it, something i dont enjoy doing and dont want to do.. from memory it was a verbal offer at the time, we were told around the $400k purse. it happened a month or 2 before you joined esb. we had countless threads and thousands of posts on the subject alan green pavlik kessler etc etc etc as to who calzaghe`s post lacy fight would be.
No of course not. But, Unfortunately for the general public, yes. :verysad A wise old man once told me, "better to fight smart than hard." ld
