As this fight draws near the speculation and predictions will begin to heat up. There is one factor in this fight that I feel many have overlooked, and that is the stylistic match-up. Cotto's style is not the one defeat the Filipino Typhoon. Cotto likes to box his opponents from the outside. This will be his downfall against the much faster Pacquiao. To beat Packy a fighter, in this case Cotto, must use his size to wear down the naturally smaller man. Inside fighting, dirty boxing, and clinching are keys to victories IMO, and Cotto does not employ this style. At least I don't recall him fighting like this on a continuous basis. Furthermore, if Cotto opts to dance around on the outside, and perhaps even fight backwards (ie. Clottey, Margarito, and the later rounds of Mosley) I don't see how he stands a chance in this fight. Don't get me wrong, it should be compelling action throughout. However, I see Pac winning by TKO in the 10th. Bet the farm on Pacquiao.
How many of Cotto's fights have you actually seen? I dont think you've seen many b/c the only fights where Cotto has fought going backwards were in the 3 you mentioned. Cotto developed into a tremendous boxer/puncher who broke his opponents down with effective pressure and relentless body punching. That is how he steamrolled his opponents at 140. At 147, look at what he did to Quintana and Judah to see how great he is at effective pressure and cutting off the ring against a much slicker fighter. Trust me, Cotto has all the tools you mentioned. He just hasnt done it b/c he is not a one-trick poney. Cotto can win coming forward or fighting backwards. You have to realize though that Margarito, Mosley, and Clottey are all bigger than Cotto so he was not able to impose his will on them, hence the fighting off the back foot. I have a feeling that Cotto will capitalize on his size advantage like he has done in so many fights before.
Agree, I think Pac has met his match this time. Cotto is bigger, stronger and IMO the more hungry fighter. Watching the 24/7 segment revealed the "rift" in the Pac camp. His manager is extremely upset with his attitude and could very well walk out on this fight. I look for a very good fight but believe that Cotto will take the Pacman to town. KO in the 10th.
I've seen SEVERAL Cotto fights; he doesn't fight the style necessary to beat Pacman. Yes, the strategy Hatton should have employed is what Cotto needs to do, minus walking into a monster left hook (preceded by a few right ones...).
I couldn't pick against Pacquiao at the moment, he keeps proving me wrong, so I'm not going to this time.
Cotto will give pac different looks. He's not gonna jump in there Hatton style and try to bull doze Pac immediately. He'll feal him out with boxing and counter punching, but will go on the attack in certain spots behind the jab.
Pacquiao has impressed me in a lot of fights with his level of skill and composure. However, I can say that Miguel Cotto has impressed me more. Early in his career, there were times that he looked like a one dimensional fighter with a glass jaw. But, then he steps it up and quiets the doubters. Example: he was exposed by Demarcus Corley (weak chin and can't handle slick fast boxers) and then he goes and takes flush punches from hard punchers like torres and quintana and wins those fights. Then he stalks Zab Judah down and shows exceptional skill against Mosley. In all those wins he impressed me and even surprised me with his improvment. I like Pac a lot, but if Cotto brings his A game along with the usual ferocious determination I don't see Pac winning.
