You simply cannot compare the present records with ones from the distant past to assess the greatness of a sportsman. New-age training methods, fitness regimes, planned match schedules, customized diets etc are just some of the factors which have made these comparisons irrelevant.

Swimmer Mark Spitz won a stunning 7 Gold medals at the 1972 Munich Olympics, most in record breaking times. Now if you compare his timings with the same events held at Beijing 3 years ago, you will find that even most of the losing semi finalists had clocked better timings that what Spitz had in 1972. Does this mean the 16th fastest swimmer of 2008 is actually a greater swimmer than Spitz? **** no, he is not. If Spitz was born in the late eighties and underwent the same training like swimmers of today, Phelps definitely wouldn't have won 8 gold medals.

The only logical way to compare two sportsmen who competed many years apart is by watching as much of them as possible, understanding their styles and making a mental projection of how they would fare against each other. The more in-depth understanding you have of the sport, the more accurate your projections will be. However, no one can still get it right all the time.

So here's how I see it. Jess Owens would still lose to Usain Bolt. But Sugar Ray Robinson would pulverize Manny Pacquiao or Floyd Mayweather, any day of the week, at 147 lbs.
