Ortiz will just be marginalized and ignored now, give it 12-18 months and he will be SO old as to not be an issue anymore. Parker is 26, he has plenty of time on his side and the division isn't stacked so he will be back in a title fight in 2-3 fights.
Yeah, Povetkin is the only other one who could make an argument, but he seems less relevant now than those two. Plus getting kdd by Price? At his age and style, he isn't likely to be remotely the same fighter he used to be
Be a good fight for Joey P to make his US debut, but which promoter and trainer does he need to switch to. Main Events could get him a 3-4 fight deal with HBO and Joey could fight out of LA under the tutelage of Robert Garcia or Abel Sanchez. The K2 need another rising star with GGG likely to be out in 2020. And Joey would be a good fit working with young Gassiev at Big Bear
Wlad dropped him 3X clean and another 3 not so much. Sasha forgets footwork sometime and has poor balance trying to wind up for a Hayemaker
There's a bit of a jan ken pon situation going on here with the second-tier guys in the top ten. My own view is that Parker would be too fast and mobile for Ortiz, but a little too raw for Povetkin, while Povetkin would be a little too static for Ortiz and might get KOed or countered to buggery. Parker's the youngest of the bunch however, and still has room to grow, so he could well end up beating both. His upside is a lot higher than I thought it was going into the Joshua fight, and hopefully his decent performance will have lit a fire up his arse to improve his game.
I don't think I've ever seen Povetkin wind up a big haymaker. He's one of the most composed and crisp punchers in the division, a modern day Joe Louis type. It was partly that commitment to form that saw him struggle so badly with Wlad, who either kept him outside his preferred punching range or smothered him in close. Had Povetkin gone all captain caveman on him he might have had a bit more success, but that's not the way he's ever fought.
I would love to se this fight Parker is young and constantly improving!! He could be the man at HW in 2-4 years.
I didn't see any FIRE from Barry about Luigi's interference every time Joey worked himself inside where he could bang the body and land the looping OH R in the clinch. Ref was there sometime even before Joey got there. And....... ABSOLUTELY NOTHING IN THE FORM OF PROTEST OUT OF JOEY'S CORNER. That was about the worst coaching I'd ever seen in a big fight. Teddy Atlas would be on the apron the second a Rd ended chasing Luigi screaming at him to let his fighter work inside.
True. I was disappointed there wasn't more outrage there. You can still show class and protest against totally unjust situations, and even if Parker was too mild mannered to complain, Barry sure as hell isn't.
An OH R or a wide L hook is a Hayemaker. Just because Sasha is cerebral for the most part doesn't change the fact that he's got instinct ie the Price counter L, or frustration ie Wlad. He mixes the power speed and angle of each punch in his arsenal maybe better than anyone in the division. But frustration or instinct gets him loading up
If Joshua could of gone for the KO he would off, but was wary of being too reckless, when he did unload, Parker was often able to fire back with something, so Ortiz couldn't just walk Parker down. More importantly Ortiz wouldn't even try, he isn't a pressure fighter, he would stand off like he did vs Wilder and try to counter Parker as he comes in. Ortiz does set up his counter nicely. But Parker isn't going to have the same issues he had with Joshua where he was struggling to get into range, Parker is just as big as Ortiz if not bigger. That combined with the speed would see Parker as the more aggressive of the 2 if they fought. Parker would lead, Ortiz would counter, so that's why Parker doesn't need to keep Ortiz at bay.
For me a haymaker is an uncontrolled baseball pitcher type of punch that's often thrown from a wide stance with a huge amount of weight transference lending it power, the type of punch that Haye, Huck or Herbie Hide tended to throw, and which often left them vulnerable or off balance. Povetkin's overhand right is always thrown in a very clean compact trajectory, as is his left hook, with power and effectiveness stemming from speed, crispness and technique, as well as the ability to follow it up immediately with another punch of similar magnitude. There's always going to be a grey area though, and even a fighter as well-schooled as Povs isn't immune from going a bit wild from time to time.
That would be good,I’d wanna see that as it doesn’t look like Wilder fight is gonna happen soon. AJ should go to Vegas,he’d still have his A side BS anyway over there no?
Parker coming into his prime will be far too god for Ortiz who is 2 years past his prime (if his age is correct). Ortiz isn't big enough to keep Parker off him plus Ortiz doesn't have the gas tank to be a threat. His last fight shows even at that slow pace he couldn't keep at on for 8 rounds. Plus Parkers chin is way too strong.
Problem for Parker is he didn't really shine in or out of the ring. Even if you think he won the fight, he didn't catch the eye in a drab fight. And as much as most of us hate all the typical pre-fight BS most boxers go for, by choosing not to Joe has failed to evolve an easily marketable persona. 'Nice guy' don't sell....
