Only times he ever gets dropped. Not a criticism in the least. I fully appreciate Povetkins pure boxing skills. Much like Pulev GGG and Robbe Helenius pre-careerending torn muscles tendon and ligaments in the weeks before Chisora. The subtle punch variation, the footwork noone sees, and the combinations thier opponents can't possibly defend against..... But.... every fighter has his vulnerability. Good posts btw
All this is overcome by 1 factor and exactly why we the boxing public rarely get these fights; The loser falls way way down the ladder. What we will get instead is matches against face first B grade heavies. But not against each other because of the consequences of a potential loss.
I don't think in this case the loser would fall too far on all the rog rankings. I'm sure he'd be in top 6 in one of the orgs, and then he could still be in a good position to play the traditional wait out game to line up a mandatory shot
Sure they will fall. That's what losses do and that'd make for 2 consecutive losses. The promoters do not like that much and the networks surely don't. Very very difficult to sell fights based on losing efforts. It makes things a very very tough sell for one of the guys who has already going to suffer about a 400% decrease in paydays. So the managers do not take the risk. And it's been that way for decades. This will be no different and does not even have a 5% chance of happening.
Ortiz got knocked out so he needs to take a mandatory 3 months off which is what he would have taken anyways if he had went to a decision. So Parker has time to get in a tuneup in between. If Whyte/Povetkin is being made, that could make Parker/Ortiz appealing to both to keep up with the jones's so to speak. There's only 2 belt holders now so that tends to force boxers to maneuver into the next shot by eliminating each other because there's less shots at a title.
I can see the appeal of wanting to avoid riskt fights, about the potential ranking loss, but it makes too much sense to make this fight. It would be the most lucrative fight they could make for a couple years, huge payoff for the winner, and the loser would have a way forward. Hell, the loser would be less intimidating to other contenders, it would increase their chances of getting another fight that could work them bank into contention for a mandatory. Case in point. Dereck Chisora. I recall reading his career earnings are higher than any other active HW who didnt have a belt. It's because he fights good fighters ALOT. And he always stays in the rankings, even though he has usually lost his biggest fights
