Logical explanation for AA-KP not happening right away? It gat to be either with the WBC, WBO and IBF policies concerning mandatories and unifications or something to do between Top Rank Inc, Team Sauerland Event and Broadcast companies HBO, Showtime and German TV rights... Reasons for Pavlik taking on Hopkins now have to do with Joe Calzaghe having taken BH before and taking RJJ next - Kelly Pavlik forcing Media and Joe's team to fight him in early 09. Finally, is it unfair for others so that Hopkins get a shot at Pavlik or is it a shame that HBO presents this event? Not at all, there's no one besides AA to fight for a MW title so KP may well step up and prove himself at the MW-SMW-LHWT range if he feels comfortable and since AA is busy; Hopkins is one of the main names at this weight class and he's still the man who unified the MW title, lost it controversially to the man who competed with KP twice; HBO should get good PPV numbers due to KP's, BH's fans and curious customers... Pavlik should win but it wouldn't really surprise us if Hopkins pulls it out. So why wouldn't it happen REALLY?
Winky was offered $1.5 million plus part of the PPV. He has no title and has been inactive for a year and has 3 fights at MW all being over a year ago. He deserves a title shot why? He gets to dictate terms why? :huh 1 cent more is 'the bigger end' but so what? He is in no position to do much negotiating at all. Arum wasn't taking a pay cut on Pavlik's behalf for him and I think rightfully so.
Winky brings nothing to the negotiating table except a reputation for boring fights, and a record of 1-1-1 in his last 3 outings. He has a VERY limited following. Winky couldn't draw flies to ****, but he still turned down $1.5 million, and a slice of the pay per view revenues.
This is Pavlik's second fight at a catch weight of 170. After the last one he fought at 160 again 5 weeks later. All totaled KP has fought at or above the SMW limit 5 times. Each of those fights ended in a quick KO.
He has fought above 160 and 165; twice at 169 above the SMW limit. But yes, they were no name opposition.
