Cotto by far is the fighter that always put him to loose, the guy have skills power heart everyting but still a lot of people put him to loose, and this is way back, since the Pinto fight. And the problem is that they alwasy critize him that he had fought soft opposition, but always are people, picking him to loose. Pinto, Avdullaev, Mallignaggi, Quintana, Judah , Mosley to name a few damm even with Bailey, Sosa and Urkal, But when he fight a fighter that nobody give them a chance or don't know about him he always stugles like Corley and Torres. When you pick him to win he make you bite your nails, and when you pick against him he own you. Damm that what he bring exigment in the ring. I will not miss this fight missmatch or not. By the way Margo, Cintron for free is good to, and with no doubt will end in knockout. Cotto by KO Margo by KO
I agree Chiko, which makes me wonder even more why Mayweather is allowed to duck Cotto so blatantly. Cotto's fans would fill either Yankee or Roberto Clemente stadiums to see him fight Floyd in what certainly be a "nail biter".
I have to admit that I've underestimated Cotto several times. Cotto looked so good in his early years and the troubles came quite unexpectedly. That's why I put money on Malignaggi, though Abdullaev could pull it off and expected Quintana to give him problems... But my most confident prediction came after all these wins: Mosley by UD or TKO... How wrong I was! Cotto has flaws in his style, can be hurt and even is he's very skilled, can be outsmarted. And still, his desire to win and ability to pull it off is stunning... He just can’t lose and comes back over and over again. I can still see Gomez giving him problems with his busy style, decent jab and size advantage, but Cotto is a monster, a MW fighting at WW who is very very strong and unbeatable on the inside. He landed some crazy hooks on Shane on the inside I've never expected Mosley could eat... By the way: it was me who made a thread about Gomez' arsenal and abilities... former The Conteder or not, he's not a fighter to be overlooked. http://www.eastsideboxing.com/forum/showthread.php?t=42883&page=3
you weren't the only one, the so called experts at max boxing picked malignaggi to outbox cotto, quiet a few people here (hitman_hatton1, brooklyn1550, c money) picked quintana to outbox him, a **** load of others picked judah to stop him, pimp c called me stupid for predicting a cotto stoppage when coto was fighting judah as a stay busy fight while he waited for margo to beat williams.
Chiko, you are right man. A lot of people only started watching Cotto fight right around the Sosa fight, so they think he is some slugger with little to no boxing skills. But if you watched him during his earlier years, you will see that he was and is still indeed a great boxer with very good hand speed. He will always get underestimated. People/haters always want to go back to the Torres/Corley fights and and say how we was exposed. What they feel to realize is that in those 2 fights ONLY, Cotto fought completely out of character. In the Corley fight, it was his first fight in Puerto Rico and he came out swinging which is not what he usually does. He came out to hyper trying to prove a point to his fans and got hurt. He learned his lesson and proceeded to dismantle Corley. With the Torres fight, him and Torres had a grudge going on b/c they were sparring partners. So again, he tried to do too much instead of being patient like he normally is. Again, he got caught. but learned his lesson and proceeded to destroy Torres. Cotto is a great fighter with flaws. But every fighter has flaws, including Floyd.
Proud to say that i am one of the few who have been behind him pretty much the whole way... Or as long as i have been watching him, which was the Sosa fight. After going back through his career, and then following him in each bout, i became more and more impressed with how well rounded he is.
:good Good to see you are honest with your picks. Shane was a very tough fighter, who came to win. It was a very fast paced fight, that IMO really cemented Cotto's place among the best fighters currently in the sport. I actually think Cotto's opposition was pretty under rated before he fought Zab. He had faced some tough, undefeated guys that posed genuine threats... And he had beaten them quite impressively. I think the biggest question with Cotto was his chin, which seems to be much stronger at 147. The shots that Zab and Shane hit him with would have knocked him out at 140 IMO.
I'd say Cotto's chin is definitely wayyyy underrated. The Corley shot was a perfect shot to the TEMPLE. It just completely ruined his equlibrium. So that one doesnt count towards his chin. Plus he was weight drained anyway. Now the torres shot was brutal. If Cotto's chin was truly that weak, he would have went down. But he didnt. The knockdown he suffered wasnt even legit b/c torres pushed him down. The uppercuts that Zab caught him with were brutal as well, but he ate them very well. Abdulaev and Mosley also caught him with some great shots. So I'd say Cotto's chin is pretty good.
Pre-Corley Jim Lampley used to say "Cotto walks through punches like he's wearing a helmet." His chin was rock solid prior to weight struggles, as showed in his fights with Pinto and Randall Bailey.
SuperBuu, dont forget about Kermit. He isnt the greatest fighter, but he hits hard as hell. I think Margarito hurts people with his accumulation of punches whereas Kermit legitimately has that one-punch KO power.
I think it was definitely the weight, and more importantly his stamina. I find personally when boxing that when your tired you get hurt so much easier. The only thing that really makes sense to me, is that he was weaker from losing all the weight, had less stamina, and was getting buzzed easier. Maybe it has something to do with oxygen and blood flow to the brain as well as equilibrium?? He never saw the punches Judah threw, and Judah is a very solid puncher. Same with Mosley. BOth of these guys are more powerful then Torres and Corley, especially considering that they are bigger guys now, who have really filled out at 147. I am pretty confident at this point that his chin is no longer as bad as what it was. Still, with Cotto fighting there is never a dull moment.
He was cutting obscene amounts of weight also. I remember one fight he put on 16 pounds from the weigh in. That is ridiculous, it must have been killing him to make the limit.
Cuttin weight is no joke. I'm not a professional athlete, but I work out all the time and consider myself in excellent shape. During the summer, i always try to see how low i can go with my weight. i run like a maniac, sit in the steam room, and do some weight training. my walk around weight is about 173. when i do all this work, the lowest i've gotten was to 161. i've damn near killed myself to break that 160 mark. now, if it is true that Cotto walks around at 165 to 170 between fights, i cant imagine how difficult it is to make 140.
