I'm neutral towards Carnera but I think the reason why he isn't credited is because of his mob connections and supposedly fixed fights. He's the only heavyweight champion from his era that's not in the IBHOF
Don't worry. With all this revisionism surrounding Carnera, he'll soon work his way into the top ten hardest punchers of all time.
Two possible explanations, would be that this stat is not as impressive as it sounds, or that they are simply wrong.
I believe Carnera was the victim of Anti Italian sentiment in America. He was also the victim of a very dishonest Press. The press creates narratives for their own agenda and once they stick, it's very hard to change people's perception. Unless we can get Hard core proof that Carnera's fights were fixed, why should he be kept out of the Hall of Fame. James J. Braddock is in with a far inferior record. He also looks sub par on most footage we have of Braddock (imo). Even his title winning effort against Baer, if anyone looks like he is taking a dive it's Baer. Even if he isn't its really the most passive performance from a Champ that looks totally disinterested and yet Braddock still only manages to squeak by. I didn't set the standard for the IBHOF but if Braddock is in, as is all the lineal champs of the 30s, then Carnera should be in too. Innuendo and rumors shouldn't be enough to keep him out. Sure you could put up the questions on his plaque about his links to the mob or suspected foul play in his bouts but I believe with his record he should be in. And let's not forget he did fight with courage and heart. He took beatings on a bum leg from Baer and he took a savage beating from Louis. He didn't quit. Jake Lamotta is in the hall of fame. and we have conclusive proof he engaged in fixed fights.
I think they Were chosen for that clip because they were fit and attractive. You had obese women back then and you have plenty of fit women today.
I have to say that primo Carnera was a rather impressive specimen. He wasn’t just big but also fit and strong.
Couldn't agree more. Even if he participated in fixed fights, he personally wasn't in on it. And there could have only been a handful at the most. He legitimately won the lineal HW title, and defended it twice. He fought a very long list of good-to-great opponents of his era. Benny Leonard called his defense "marvelous." Joe Louis ranked him in his top 5 wins. He had an incredible amount of professional ring experience. He should be in the Hall of Fame. However, sometimes lore overshadows reality. Revisionism should generally be avoided. But no fighter deserves it more than Primo Carnera.
Most heavyweights from that era aren't looked upon in a favourable light really with the few exceptions, poor video quality, the connections to the mafia, losing his biggest bouts, his highlight is his size and back in the day it seems like he was viewed as some kind of circus act. A mix of all things are why he's viewed the way he is. Guy was in unreal shape for his size though, physical specimen, shame he didn't have the other intangibles you'd expect of a man that size.
