There just aren't enough draws in boxing anymore. Which for me I don't really care. As long as the best fight the best. Enough support to headline a massive major cable network card -Kovalev -Ward -GGG -Loma Enough support to draw significant PPV buys -Cotto -Canelo Enough support to crossover into mainstream sports culture -Nobody You see there's really only about 6 or so financially relevant fighters left in the sport of boxing anymore in America. That's it. Everybody else is fighting for pennies. Or fighting in Germany, England, etc. while being completely invisible to Americans. Once Cotto retires or gets Roy Jones like shot we'll be down to 1 PPV draw.
PPV will never die. You're forgetting the likes of Anthony Joshua who's just signed a 3 year deal with ShowTime PPV, and the likes of future superstars such as Errol Spence Jr. coming through the ranks. It's just a transition period with Mayweather and Pacquiao retiring, but the next PPV stars will arrive soon.
Networks are going to rely more on PPV, not less. With ever-shrinking budgets, going that route gets fights made that they can't afford to fund internally. Essentially, PPV uses fans to subsidize the cost of funding bigger fights, with the end result of the fight budget getting stretched further. Networks are happy to breakeven, and even a loss costs them less than funding the fight entirely themselves. 10-15 years ago, it was an entirely different ballgame. Networks would be putting most of these lower-tier PPV's on their regular channels. The boxing budget at HBO, for example, was triple what it is now. The end result is that there are an increasing number of good fights that are too expensive for regular HBO/Showtime, but not viable enough yet for good PPV.
Promoters need to invest in the technologies of today - the internet and Apps. I'd pay for a monthly subscription, if reasonably priced, to get online access to live boxing and archived content. Considering any willful boxing fan with online access can already find this stuff for free, it really would have to be premium quality and production value in order to draw people in. But theres no reason why promoters couldn't still make a bundle if promoted and executed correctly.
One of the main reasons PPV is dying is obvious Floyd Joy Sinclair Mayweather jr , The NSAC, USADA & Vegas boxing conspired to keep Mayweather unbeaten by any means possible, Legal & ILLEGAL !!! Foolish boxing fans paid super inflated prices to watch farces not fights. Not one Mayweather opponent had a legitimate fair fight against him in over 10 years. Fans finally caught on that they were being ROBBED!!
No, the only thing I "idolize" about Floyd is his work ethic when training. I can separate the good, and the bad, from people. :good I wouldn't even be friends with Floyd [emoji38]
When PPV starts to thrive he's going to create a new account and talk about how PPV will thrive for years to come [emoji38]
