It is very likely that Joe Calzaghe WILL NOT throw 1000 punches vs. Hopkins. Styles make fights, and punch output can be nullified by 1) movement, 2) angles, 3) clinching/infighting. CLAIM: Bernard is great at cutting his opponent's output and will do so vs. Calzaghe. Some STATISTICS (source Compubox) to support my claim: WINKY WRIGHT: Winky Wright usually has a high punch output (he threw 1011 punches vs. Ike Quartey) still Hopkins threw 640 shots and Winky was limited to 618. Hopkins punch output EXCEEDED Winky's. FELIX TRINIDAD: Bernard threw 653 punches to 329 for Trinidad (12 rounds). As a comparison, vs. Mayorga, Trinidad threw 460 punches (8 rounds). BERNARD CUT TRINIDAD'S OUTPUT BY HALF. ANTONIO TARVER: Against Tarver, Hopkins landed 133 of 417 total punches to just 78 of 437 for Tarver. As a comparison, in his rematch vs. Glen Johnson, Tarver averaged 71 punches thrown per round (852 total punches)... the light heavyweight average is 54 punches per round, 648 total)... to Johnson's 564 total punches. Bernard literally CUT TARVER'S OUTPUT BY HALF. If you think Calzaghe's workrate is going to be a factor, if you think his workrate will be THE factor... If you think Calzaghe's main strength is his punch output.... YOU ARE IN FOR A BIG DISAPPOINTMENT.
Yes. It's highly overated. I still favour Calzaghe but I think the Calzaghe's people near hysteria about punch output is a little odd.
What so few people seem to realize is that if Calzaghe fights his normal wreckless style, he's going to pay a big price against a skilled tactician like Hopkins. Calzaghe, however, is too smart for this, despite the ignorance exuded by so many members of his loyal fanbase. I'd be shocked if Calzaghe came out looking to overwhelm Hopkins with workrate. It would be the absolute DUMBEST thing Joe could possibly do.
which he won't and you know he won't. he most certainly didn't in his last fight and showed his very impressive ability to fight on the outside. if bernard wants a war he'll get one but joe like bernard will adjust his style come fightnight to a style that offers him the best chance of getting that W.
Exactly, in other words, Hopkins will be INDIRECTLY cutting Joe Calzaghe's output by half. Couple of well timed counters will convince Calzaghe that he's got to be careful and Joe will CUT HIS OUTPUT himself.
He still did on many occasions vs. Kessler. Kessler couldn't fight going backwards, which is why Calzaghe got away with the bull****. Still, Kessler managed to land a couple of bombs in the middle rounds. Also, Bernard will stay low and move a lot, which will not give much of a target for Calzaghe to land his jab without opening himself up badly.
the second round was the only round in which calzaghe fought like an all out maniac. after he'd been bombed a few times in the third he went to using his outside game and mixing it in with the occasional flurry.
He's been tagged plenty of times by harder punchers than BHop it won't stop him going forward, you're clutching at straws.
