Is he broke? He was a PPV star, he had a music career, ha was on the TV, he had/has a good marketing value, and i'm sure his salary from HBO is not bad.

Obviously this last fights were just hurting his career and health, and he didn't really advertise his fights because i think he felt shame. Why he did this?

    This.

"When Roy decided to take Russian citizenship, it became clear that he was facing big tax problems. On September 10 of this year, I flew to the United States, in his hometown of Pensacola, to meet with his lawyer John Wirt. There I signed a letter on his behalf, which guarantees to pay $ 3 million for the debts of Russian citizen Roy Jones, as well as taking care of all of his tax obligations," Hryunov explained to Life Times."

"And this is not an obligation personally to Roy, namely to its creditors. To date, I have paid $1 million. This is a very serious circumstance. Before anyone spreads any rumors, I have stayed in this commitment. After that, he began to live safely and freely. But before that there were constant reminders from collectors who were searching for additional earnings.
    "

Hryunov says Jones made a lot of money during his career, but the majority of his funds were used on business ventures which failed.

Never knew this and this is the clearest, most legitimate reason (with the source) Ive ever seen given and it does make a lot of sense.

Shame that a guy like Roy was left in that financial situation. And not from so much blowing his money on material things but just on failed businesses.... sad.

Roy is obviously highly uneducated when it comes to financial issues and got himself into debt although he earned 10s of millions over the span of his career. It requires an incredible amount of stupidity to waste that much money. And he is paying dearly for it now with his health.

Incredible that someone who earned so much money would feel the need to earn more by going into businesses in which he was not expert.

Is this where I am supposed to feel bad for a guy who made over 100 million and still has a well paying job commentating on HBO yet is somehow in debt?

    Good post, Jack.

So he went the way of an old Joe Louis. Debt from failed investments.

Don't let that completely fool you. Lifestyles are real.

For the people judging him on failed businesses because he doesnt know about the business himself.

Oftentimes these fighters hire professionals or people that do know the business to manage their money, and these professionals guide them into moves that lead to lost earnings. Its not always a fighter just making up **** he wants to invest in. You just never know the details behind why certain moves are made.

Dan Marino, upon retiring from American football where he earned (at the time) huge money, was advised to invest in a specific tech firm. He invested something like three quarters of his assets. The firm was bankrupt within one year. All of Marino's funds, gone with the wind. And into the CBS booth as an analyst he went.

Roy loves the game and hasn't been fighting purely for the money.

He's only fought once in the past year, and his purses will have been peanuts compared to what he used to earn. He also wouldn't have just retired if he'd have had no choice but to continue. Although I do think that we will see the Silva fight at some point.
