Roy has done that for quite some time. It wasn't an issue until his chin got checked by Tarver. Watch, for instance, his fight with Julio Gonzalez. Roy would frequently lean on the ropes and fight off of the ropes while they went to his body. Since his KO's, though, there is an added air of suspense everytime he does it.
He had an OK jab in the amatuers, and a quick flicking jab in the pros, but never an amazing jab. It was never a very hard jab, he often times used it more as a range finder to land his lead rights or leaping left hooks.
He used to move a lot on the ropes though. Switch from side to side, use a variety of angles, and fire off quick combinations. Now he just leans back and turtle shells for the most part, mainly because he is just getting old. He has lost that tenacity and the endurance that he once had.
No way man. Hopkins is much older than him and Hopkins is still moving side to side all the time. Hopkins is rarely on his back on the ropes.
Johnson wore him down through the ropes and so did Tarver in the 1st fight and even in the 3rd fight. Let us put is this way, Jones loses rounds every time he is put on the ropes.
Don't be and idiot. Hopkins is OBVIOUSLY an exception to the rule. :nut - " Hopkins is older then Jones and still has all of his footspeed.....thus Jones should have all of his footspeed too....after all he's 38 and hopkins is 40+ " :nut :-patsch
No Hopkins aint no exception to the rule. His style is what is enabled him to box so long. Rj style relies heavily on his legs. RJ never really had "good defense" he was jus so fast and agile on his feet that he could make people miss. Bernard doesnt use his legs as much as RJ, or doesnt have to depend on them as much lemme say that instead of use them. Notice in B-Hops last couple of fights he hasnt picked fighters who move aroubnd or very elusive to fight. WHy b/c i dont care if ya 41 your 41, he doesnt eant to use his legs so much, he has always fought people who kind of just stayed in front of him, or people who moves a lil bit. Not 2 much 2 make him chase them over all over the ring. He has also never really faced a decent pressure fighter, I think Winky Wright is going to test how superhuman the 41yr old is. With all that being said I still have Hopkins winning by UD:yep
Roy Jones has lost the bounce in his legs he used to jump into his punches and move side to side when he was on the ropes however now he just puts his hands up when on the ropes and occasionally counters even in the 3rd tarver fight he seemed to still have decent footspeed but his last 2 fights there hasnt been much foot movement to speak of. Good fight on saturday however he seemed to have improved his defence abit needs to stay active
I do agree with I think he lost some bounce in his legs. But I think the layoff kinda messed him up as well. B/c against Prince Badi he moved around a lot more than he did in this fight
He's seemed a bit lethargic in his last few fights, throwing few punches, laying on the ropes. I think he still has it physically, but there's some mental rust. He needs to get that confidence back.
this fight he actually looked confident, I think he prolly still has somemore mental rust. But i think the only problem now is his legs. I think he needs to do some serious leg conditioning, to get his legs back under him. B/c for his style he depends heavily on his legs. And without them he wont look as good as he use to. I think he needs 2 fight nmore often to stay sharp, and do a lot of legs conditioning, uf he can right that wrong I think he can still beat a lot of fighters out there. B/c his speed, and power is still there
LOL "he needs to get his confidence back" LOL.....Did you actually watch Jones' last two fights( vs bhadi and Henshaw )? Jones looked very confident in those fights, even taunting during the action. Jones HAS his confidence, but he's lost defensive reflexes and almost all of his mobility. And Fab233 Jones moved around more in the Bhadi fight( though he was still on the ropes a lot when Bhadi wanted him there ), but not like the jones of old. He still looked like a man walking through quicksand. He moved around the ring the same way a micky ward-type fighter would move around the ring. You made some good points in reference to Hopkins, but how could you say Jones didn't really have good defense in his prime? Defense is making your opponent miss his punches....and Jones was the best in the business at doing that. he didn't have a good traditional defense, but his athletic-based defense was the best in the business. Jones is still fun to watch, but in a different way.
I'm sure Jones is doing all of the leg conditioning he can do. Him and his team have to know his legs aren't nearly what they used to be. The thing is athletes seem to lose the legs first as they age. Look at Micheal Jordan.....he lost his tremendous leaping ability in his early thirties. Vince Carter doesn't jump as high as he used to jump. The legs seem to be the first to go, and I don't think you can get them back.
