When the prey weights a ton, it is conceivable that it would tire before a smaller, more efficient creature, no matter how many legs it has. Although, Human hunting of these creatures often relies on teamwork and injuring the animal instead of just outlasting it. Put a human in with a wolf. Wolves really do run prey into the ground, and they lack the ability to sweat. They are more efficient, faster and fitter than humans. And as far as gravity doing the work for runners - BS. You have to actively push yourself forward when running. Walking on a flat/declined surface is the only way gravity helps significantly.
