Serious, non-disillusioned question. What's the point?

If we don't care about boxing history why should we give a **** about modern day boxing. If we took boxing purely on what it is now i wouldn't even be that big of a fan.

Many people watch modern sports for entertainment without performing in-depth research into their history. Many also participate in modern sports (including boxing) while knowing only a little bit about anything beyond the past 10 years or so.

    Yet many still are.

I dont believe there is true boxing fan not interested in its history, so for you its good for "fans" not to know about Ali, SRR, Louis, Hagler, Leonard etc as you said fighters that retired more than 10 years ago...i dont get it i can not call that person boxing fan...

I didn't say that I wanted fans to ignore Ali, Leonard, etc. or that it was a good thing. I said that fans of many sports -- not just boxing -- don't pay that much attention to 100+ years of their sport's history. Many care about the last few years, and that's it.

Why do we insist that true boxing fans should know all about the sport's history? Even many fighters and trainers don't, after all.

Aside from it being interesting and making for good discussion, I suppose there is no real necessity to it... Its a hobby just like any other I guess. Of course, it does help to understand current fights that you are watching better, if you have a working knowledge of the game, and in what direction certain things came from.

To really love the sport, you have to know the sport, and to know the sport, you have to look beyond what's right in front of you. History provides that familiarity and multiple scenarios to examine.

Besides, why treat quality fights and quality fighters as less valuable when they are at this point generally considered more exciting and consistently more skilled performers? A good scrap is a good scrap and an elite talent is something special, whether it occurs today, yesterday, tomorrow, or 40 years ago. Boxing is a sport, and it's history is an inseparable part of it's modern existence.

Boxing, like any other human activity, is the sum total of its history. Experience improves efficiency and effectiveness and provides timeless entertainment if you care to look.

Fans have a gold mine of great stories and vignettes in boxing history.

Boxers and trainers have a gold mine of tried-and-true techniques, some of which is forgotten, in its history, that will improve their game. Considering the surplus of lazy fighters and lazier trainers who aren't much more than bucket-men anyway, those who delve into the past are sure to find advantages.

...Many managers, promoters, and corrupt organization have something in boxing history to consider as well. That is, they won't be lonely in hell.

As Softhands says, theres great stories. And these stories are already written, to be read. Tbh i havent really followed the boxing scene for the past 5 years or so and couldnt tell you the names of the top contenders out there today.

It's actually a brilliant question. We need to remind ourselves why any of this, among the various sports or enterprises available, is worth discussing.

And the reason is that Boxing has a great of oral and written tradition, unlike football, american football, basketball or so many other sports... Boxing has had a continuous cadre of great writers and commentators who have woven a history worth repeating, examining, and critiquing. It is unique in this respect but also that is its continual evolution not only reflects the social, economic and political convulsions of the world, but actually acts as the proverbial canary in the coal mine, coming so early and prescient.

It is, and always has been, the greatest sport on this earth.

Because boxing, in it's entirety isn't just what's the flavor of the day or the week but what came before...the past is a scaffolding on which today's scene is constructed. Comparisons are made, pro and con between today's stars and scenarios and those of the past to make for a richer groundwork and base of knowledge than would be possible otherwise.
