I’ll just guess it’s because most amateur boxers in the US are usually young guys preparing for the pros and the Russians were training entirely around being 3 round fighters for an entire career?
Certainly didn’t hurt. If you were a Soviet fighter, this was the pinnacle of your sporting & probably whole life, & you knew it. American Boxers would not have wanted for motivation, often coming from nothing to being on the world stage, but, it’s relative.
