why such dislike for ali?

For me it´s because he was an *******. Look at his persona and behaviour towards other people. How can you like somebody like that? I like the Pattersons and Schmelings not the Alis of the world.

Aside of that, I´m a Frazier-man.

Nevertheless, Ali is one of the greatest fighters and perhaps the greatest hw ever. No doubt about that.

 

I think there are three main reasons:

1. He's a draft dodger and linked to the liberal left and the protest movement of the 60's, which doesn't sit well with those who have more conservative values.

2. He had a controversial persona and acted in a derogatory manner against other fighters, most famously Frazier.

3. He is just too mainstream. To be a "real" boxing fan you should not be an Ali fan and much rather laud Joe Louis, a textbook fighter who did his talking in the ring.

Personally I think nr. 1 and nr. 3 (often a combination of them) are the most common, but nr. 2 is the motivation that will be used the most.

 

Personaly I don't have a problem with a fighter calling themself "the greatest" as long as they try to prove it.

Ali used the term verry loosley in any event. While he probably did consider himself to be the best heavyweight of all time, he tended to use the term to imply "best heavyweight around at the moment".

 

I give him his dues but he was an *******, simply the best way to describe him.

I admire Ali as a fighter but I dislike him as a person. Where does this put me?

I always wonder where people get the arrogance from to put other people into drawers.

 

The loudest guy in the room is usually pretty divisive. He was loud about some very controversial and inflammatory ideas at that. I neither love nor hate Ali. I rate him as the best heavyweight of all time, I rate him in the top 10-20 fighters ever p4p. As a person, sometimes liked him, sometimes didn't. I never thought of him as some great hero. He's just a man to me, apart from boxing. He does get more hate for words than a lot of fighters seem to get for actual, admitted, violent actions (LaMotta, etc), which I find a bit comical.

 

Some people like to go against the grain with popular things. I'd imagine it's like that for most people. Not including the terrible, terrible bitter spastics.

 

For the people who condemn Ali as an ******* due to how he acted against opponents (especiallly Frazier), are your attitude the same to following fighters?

Corbett, who often displayed an arrogant streak, never more so than when in Jeffries' corner against Johnson when he continually abused Jack racially.

Robinson, who was disliked by many for his arrogant behaviour. Especially by Basilio, who hates him to this day for the way he acted.

Duran, who was the only fighter I know of to insult another fighter's wife to her face. Perhaps the most despicable acting pre-fight I've ever heard of.

Hopkins, who often talks derogatory about and to opponents, and decided to put it in racist terms against Calzaghe.

 

Yeah, that kind of shows the hollowness of that line of arguing. I mean, if you want to find true lowlifes in boxing you don't have to look far. But guys like Robinson, LaMotta and Monzon never get anything like the abuse Ali gets here.

 

Well, in all fairness to LaMotta, Monzon and Robinson, bros before hoes.

 

Yeah, that will be the defence. "Sure, we are beaters, killers and rapists of women, but in all fairness Your Honour..."
