:lol:You just know that the blond guy has a hidden agenda, though. Lucky for the other guy that this was before shower rooms had come into existence.

Wait, so anybody rating Louis as the greatest HW is doing so disingenuously because they dislike Ali and see Louis as the less mainstream alternative? :huh

Even Ali's biggest fans can generally admit that they're at least receptive to and not immediately dismissive of arguments for Joe at #1 (even if they do disagree).

There were bathing houses back then. They were very popular back then. But there were women allowed too.

B,for all his faults, when did you hear Jake LaMotta, taunt, mock degrade an opponent,as Ali did constantly. ?
Or for that matter,Ray Robinson ? Yes Robinson was haughty to Basilio, but
never called him vile names, nor degrade Carmine's looks. Never !
For all of his astounding talents, Ray, [greatest fighter since Greb], never
beat his own drum as Ali did. Taunting a beaten opponent is despicable, and
shouldn't be excused. Guess who made a career out of this practice ?
    Twasn't Jake or Ray....

No. That wasn't what I meant. I think there's a perfectly good case for having Joe as nr. 1.

    I'm one of them

Robinson treated Basilio with utmost contempt with no reason except arrogance. Basilio himself thinks that's bad enough. In fact, most boxers who knew Ali liked him (him and Norton became fast friends, for example), but I've heard no kind words said about Robinson as a person.

I didn't say that LaMotta treated opponents disrespectfully. But being a ****** (by own admission) should be enough grounds for dislike. Just like Robinson being a notorious wife beater. These are far worse acts in my book than calling names.

    Too much self-serving rhetoric.............

Clearly thought because he was the Heavyweight Champion of the World, and
very-talented that he was entitled to special priveledges.

Used his charm, quick-wit and good looks, to enhance his position in the media,
which ended up creating a positive view of his cause, when in reality, he just
didn't want to go into the U.S. Military, because he was enjoying a 'great life'.

Stop trying to make everything about Ali, you dolt. This thread is about bathhouses, through the ages. ...I suppose you'll go find an old newspaper clipping that ties that in to Ali now.

  11. i've always thought that some of ali's comments could've been influenced by the public and the press.
at the time whatever stuff ali said was a big thing, a good story for the press.
i wouldn't be surprized if he felt a little pressure in trying to outdo what he said in the previous fight, to become a little more controversial.

i say that because thats what the press wanted, i wouldn't be surprized if they gave him loaded questions sometimes just so ali would say something outrageous.
so at times, as we know, he went overboard and crossed the line.
he tried to give the press what they wanted. add that to a huge ego and you have a show-off of a man that could take things too far at times.

i'm not making an excuse of how he insulted and hurt frazier[and his kids], but the press wanted more and more from him, and i'm sure he enjoyed satisfying them too.
however sometimes i think he just lost control, but he should of realized that some comments were not called for.

as for the hate for ali, i think its similar to beckham in a way. when someone gets mega-famous it can really turn people off. they tend to concentrate more on the celebrity than the sportsmen.
    it can really polarize people.

But,,,,,,,,a young Cassius Clay was a 'towel-boy' once.

He fetched dry towels for the Members at the Louisville Country Club,
    back in 1954.
He was a 12-year old 'Members Asssistant'.
For extra money, he would wash the members golf clubs.
Pay, .50 cents per Golf Bag.

NO ALI IS THE GREATEST HE BEAT FOREMAN FRAZIER LISTON WHO ALL FROM THE MOST SUPER SKILLED ERA OF BOXING

Exactly, more battered wife syndrome. Anyway I just don't like Ali's particular brand of **** talking, his boxing style, or his influence on future boxers(more shoeshining, excessive lateral movement, hands low, etc).
