Word. The mixture of **** talking and boxing style is similar to Mayweather Jr. It's different hearing it from a small Latino man who fights like a berserker.
Ali was human, and humans make mistakes. Lots of us are guilty of this, including heavyweight champions. Muhammad seems to get slagged off for it more than anyone else, though. Higher standards set more criticism ?
Ali was a non-conformist who succeeded big-time. I think this is reason enough to provoke uncompromising hatred in some people.
If you dig into his 1960's back-ground, you will find many contradictions. From his marriage, to his views, to boxing, to whites, to blacks, to money. You can't pin one thing on him, because of he constantly changed his view. He stood tall for his rights, but in reality, he stood for nothing-at-all.
He was a showboat, continually raising his arms over a fallen opponent throughout most of his 20s before retreating to a neutral corner, doing this to opponents like Patterson, Williams, Folley, and Bonavena following the winning knockdown. However, he curtailed this with more restrained behavior after taking that humbling knockdown in the FOTC. This abruptly mature change is in evidence from Ellis on. Later, SRL pissed a lot of people off with the same mimicking arm raising antics whenever he dropped an opponent. What he did to Frazier went a little too far though. Joe was certainly acrimonious with Ellis following Smoke's first defeat of Jerry Quarry (and Joe was interviewed in footage from 1966 and 1967 calling his future rival "Clay" instead of his Muslim name), and quite celebratory himself at times when a fight was stopped in his favor, but Muhammad didn't have to go to quite the extremes he did. (Somehow though, Foreman got a bit more of a free pass from fans for accusing Joe of quitting in Kingston, although Cosell, Gutteridge and Carpenter among other commentators ripped George a new one for this ridiculous affront to Frazier's character. Quote Howard [spitting it out contemptuously as he defended Smoke during his rematch with George]: "Joe Frazier never quit in his life!") As a supplement to that previous paragraph, some people attribute dislike for Ali to Cosell's support of Muhammad. But it must also be acknowledged that Howard was one of Frazier's most vocal advocates also, and that Cosell expressed appreciation and affection for Jerry Quarry as well. I've always been disgusted by Muhammad's attempt to use Thyrolar as a PED for his challenge of Holmes without telling anyone, violating a core tenet against deception of the religion he professed to be a minister for during Vietnam, then audaciously using that attempt at deception as the excuse for his subsequent poor performance and defeat. This is like Holyfield blaming his loss to Moorer on a steroid induced heart malfunction. Karma's a *****, and what Ali attempted against Larry backfired, biting him on the ass. Today, Frazier openly pities Muhammad. Ali's speech impaired, not in any way insensible, and it must drive him bonkers to know that Joe now feels sorry for him. "Revenge is a dish best served cold," and Frazier's revenge would seem complete. (He's even calling him "Ali" now, rather than "The Butterfly."
Spot on The above usurper hoped too slip into the dead mans shoes of Ali even though Ali still had a heartbeat & also hi-jacked the real "Sugar Mans" moniker to create the illusion that he was the natural succeser & heir apparent without having to do the time that Ali & Robinson put in!!! All thats gone wrong with boxing today came be blamed on Leonard who was allowed to hi-jack the sport all through the 80's until Terry Norris & Hecho saw him off for good. Ali you can love or hate for whatever reasons but he saved boxing back in the 60's & fought everyone & ducked no one & his manipulation of the media was more for the benifit of the sport & to generate sales along with enhancing his puplic profile in causes he thought appertained to him regardless of how de-funked they look now. Easy with hindsite to ridicule, much like the BRICK phone of the 80's. Each to there time as they say & ALI was truly an incredible global icon & the more he travelled the world the more he understood about Humanity. When he came to the UK he could'nt believe that 10's of thousands turned out to see him, "all this white folk coming to see me???" & that was just to open a supermarket!!! Travel expands the mind as they say & like all folk, Ali was a product of his generation & race in America & as we know things were a big bad different back then. Ali was'nt a media creation !! He created the media!! But in the main you've got too admire & admit he was the bravest of the brave & IMO Brilliant. They don't make-em like that anymore:deal .... I'am not an Ali fan but i've nothing but 1000% respect for what he acheived & attempted in the ring. As the old proverb goes, "He who is without sin cast the 1st stone":smoke
Its because Ali lived such a great life, the standards for him have been set to unrealistic levels. The same people who criticize Ali for being a bad person, are the same people who will not contribute .01% of the energy (not finances) that Ali has contributed to the human race. Jealousy, depression, insecurity, and lack of certainty in life style are the main reasons people will dislike Ali. If you feel uneasy about this statement, maybe im talking about you. I say that because to have such a person doing so many positive things in the world, yet to only focus on the negatives that pale in comparison, is to have internal problems. People like Duce have probably been raised as a "fend for yourself" guy. So he sees a someone like Ali with genuine love for the human race. And he wont have it. So much so that he does extensive research to prove to himself that Ali was actually selfish. All the time he does research though, Ali was outside helping humans better their lives. Or at least giving genuine effort. Ali's agenda = help fellow human Duce' agenda = assassinate character of those who are trying to help fellow humans
You're right Bokaj. Corbett was downright nasty hurling all the slurs from Jeffries corner in the match against Jack Johnson. First of all, I'm not an Ali hater but I didn't approve us his behaviour towards alot of his opponents. The bad thing about Ali is that the things he said to Frazier were right at the peak of the civil rights movement. This was a time when blacks were fighting the Jim Crow laws some 50 years later and all the blind racism that America could get away with on paper. Frazier helped Ali when the man was poor and exiled, handing him wads of dollars to get back on his feet only to have him turn against him in order to sell tickets for a fight? When you hear Ali call Frazier an "Uncle Tom" and the "other type negro" with such conviction from the british interview with Michael Parkinson, you can't help but think the guy is the biggest a$$hole who's so full of himself. It's no different than a white person calling another white person, a nazi, skinhead, or trailer trash. On top of that, Frazier's kids were abused at school by other kids just because their daddy was the opponent.
Hopkins is a racist piece of ****, but you love him bodhi And he talks **** about other fighters. And he's boring as ****.
So when you die, we strictly judge your life on your beliefs up till age 30? The growth presented afterwords, more than half your life, doesnt caount for anything? "A man who views the world at 50, the same way he did at 30, wasted 20 years of his life." - Muhammad Ali
MR. REZ, Maybe you do not realize the lasting impression that a young Cassius Clay or Muhammad Ali had on people in the 60's. No agenda here,,,,,, just a little of re-visited factual history. No character assassination, my few words won't change anything. Muhammad Ali has covered the full spectrum, good, bad, nice, mean, probably better than anyone else who ever touched the surface of this great planet of ours.
