 I don´t give two cents about how I´m judged by people that I never knew. ;) And I bet neither does Ali.

I don't dispute that Ali said some very nasty things about Frazier (even though it wasn't as one way as people tend to believe), I'm just calling for a bit of consistency. If a fighter is to be judged by his behaviour outside of the ring, Ali isn't the one who comes out the worst. Far from it.

    'ALI SAYS WHITE HOPE SEARCH'

    July 1965,

'Before Negroes began to dominate boxing you didn't hear anything about creating a commission', claims Muhammad Ali.

'All this boxing commotion is brought up because there's no good white fighters around.
They're all looking for 'white hopes'.
'As soon as Negroes start dominating football, baseball and basketball you'll hear a
yelp for federal control. A black man ain't supposed to dominate anything in this
    country.'

Your word does mean a thing. A lot of people in this forum have the upper hand when talking boxing with those around them. There is some responsibility to what information your provide people, and the level of balance in which you share it.

Yes the 60’s was a big time for Ali, and a lot happened. But lets not pretend he wasn’t in the main spotlight for at least another ten years after that. In fact, he was more famous in the 70’s worldwide than he ever was in the 60’s.

And in those 20 years of his 69 year old life, you decide to focus on one specific decade. And within that specific decade you only provide information about the negative aspects of his life. Every single time. And you try to pass it off as "This is Muhammad Ali's character". The funny thing is, you and I both know that when your sifting through all that info deciding to post these little tidbits for the forums, you deliberately turn your head and completely ignore all of his good deeds.

I would call that an agenda.

    Even if your agenda was:

“Hey guys, I think Ali is great, he was a great person and a great boxer, but I just thought I’d collect information for you guys of all the controversial or bad things he has done just to better inform everybody.”

It would STILL mean that at one point in your life, you made the moral decision focus strictly on the negative. Which is not normal behavior for people who call themselves boxing fans. Many would argue that it's not normal behavior period.

I cant ever imagine in a day of my life researching any great boxer: Ali, Frazier, Louis, Dempsey…going through their entire lifetime, and ONLY using the information that tries to put that boxer in a bad light. How can you do that? How do you live that life, and how do you uphold that mentality? Can anybody on this forum imagine doing this? For ANY boxer that you would call great, no matter how much you disagree with him?

And you know what Duce? It wouldn’t be so bad, if the mans life we are talking about didn’t have such a rich abundance of positvity.

Not to mention you have never provided a single source for any of the information you have posted which I am fully confident that if I looked at all them at least half of them would debunk your information based on your loose interpretation of the information and who it is being provided by.

For someone who says Larry Holmes is his favorite fighter, you should know something about white hopes. Ahem...Gerry Cooney.

Are you really surprised Ali was saying this in 65 when they introduced Cooney AFTER Holmes?

Another twisted bias on facts through your weird and obsessive agenda.

I'm not sure how you inter-twined that one.

"Gentleman' Gerry Cooney hated the term, as it was the 'liberal media' who labeled him that.

'Irish' Jerry Quarry was also labeled that, by hateful sports writers, who just flat-out
    didn't like him.

The term 'Great White Hope' is nothing more than a fight publicists term, to stir up interest in a bout.

As for Larry Holmes being my favorite fighter, it had nothing to do with his color,
it had everything to do with way he battled through adversity.

    By the way, my favorite sporting event;
Texas Western vs. Kentucky (NCAA Basketball Championship, March 1966),,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,look it up and see why!

True. Others, though, have come out with far more controversial statements over the years, and very little is said about it.

I think some of the dislike is just a backlash that stems from the fact that Ali is portrayed in the mainstream as a hero to all humanity. A personality who transcended sport and had only positive things to say and a positive effect.

But as has been pointed out, he wasn't perfect, he's was a human being. And some of the stuff he said and did is not in line with the superficial mainstream image.

I will say, as boxing fans our world might have been a significantly more boring if there had been no Muhammad Ali.
Whether good, bad or a mixture, there's no one quite like him.

  11. i think that ali/clay has always fundamentally been a decent human being.
unfortunately he was also quite naive in the early years, just right to be manipulated by whoever wished to use him.

i've seen those interviews with michael parkinson, and they don't make for pleasant viewing at all. actually i tried watching one of them recently and found i couldn't, it made me too uncomfortable, the things ali was saying.

all that stuff about the white man sounds unpleasant.
however, i think ali at that time was like a sponge, if he came across something new he jumped into it full of gusto.
he was easily led and probably trusted some people far too much. i've never believed that everything he said back then was coming from the heart.
he was indoctrinated by clever people at times, and would just spout out anything he was told. well thats my opinion anyway.

however if he truly believed some of the more controversial things he said, later on he may of simply changed his mind about certain subjects. which is what we all do from time to time as we mature and/or gain more knowledge on a particular thing.

    You nailed it.

As to the threadstarter, the bigger the target, the more entrenched the vitriol. As the biggest start boxing ever produced, Ali is the biggest target.

I'm not a fan of his mainly because of the huge hoardes of people who are massive fans of his and will blatantly ignore that he wasn't perfect.

I feel the same way about Joe Louis and Sugar Ray Robinson aswell, but in their cases, I also don't like how they were as a person whereas I have no issues with Ali as a person.
