They doesn't get nearly as much flak as Ali does for his taunting of Frazier, though. Next to Leonard beating Hagler that's the trangression that's the most condemned on this forum.
I like your avatar.,,,,,,,Good choice. I saw the Yardbirds in August 1966, in Westport, Connecticut With Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page.......:good,,,,Dualing lead guitars. Muhammad Ali was like one mixed bag-of-tricks. I liked him better in 1962.
You kidding me? The classic loves FAT OLD SHOT LEWIS TKO6 PRIME VITLAY. That **** makes me happy even thinking about it. It's great. Everytime I feel down I think FAT OLD SHOT LEWIS TKO6 PRIME VITLAY, and I feel a little better.
J,as Ronald Reagan said "here we go again ".This post is about Ali,and why is he such a figure of dislike today. Because of certain obnoxious traits Ali had as a fighter, taunting his beaten opponents, calling Joe Frazier vile racists names, mocking them, avoiding the Army, while other poor fellow citizens, served,as I, and millions of others did,and being a braggart, and joining the black muslims to boot. Well JM ,tell me what in the world had Jack Dempsey to do with this thread on Ali.? You say I ,and other posters are upset with anything "derogatory",said about Jack Dempsey. Damn right if it is a LIE,and not Factual ! This is not a game of "tit for tat" wer'e playing. If Ali was a scoundrel in those days, and you feel Dempsey should be criticized unfairly to BALANCE the scales, whilst I and other posters, should remain quiet, is childish. I am to old to play this game... Enjoy...
I love the guy... he`s the most entertaining sportsman, not just boxer, there has ever been in history, no-one comes close.... as a bonus, he was a truly brilliant boxer as well, that tends to help towards my feeling.
Yes that is true, but no one is going on about how they were great men out of the ring and what a differance they made to the world and all that crap.
true but most of this forum don't believe that ****. the casual fan and non fan my buy that but most on the classic know him for what he was: a very talented man. that's it. Not a force for social change. Not a peaceful religious man. Not a pious philosopher. He was a dude who did the most with what he had and ****ed every woman, stepped on every person and spent every dollar on his way up.
Don't forget the movies, the restaraunt he bought, the apartment buildings, cars, the travelling, the hamburger restaraunt, the high-priced attorneys, the limo drivers, the church he bought,,,,,,,,, And then his followers claim he was a regular guy. He was a 'smart and cunning businessman', and used people to get ahead, just like everyone else. And I don't begrudge him for one bit on that platform. Capitalism Baby.
People who don't like ali as a person need to be chastised. He helped many people (which he did not publicize), caused hostages to be released and he also talked a man out of jumping off a building and commiting suicide. Everyone has their faults and ali certainly had his. Just because he didn't go over to vietnam and get killed doesn't make him a bad person. Some of you that criticize him for it wouldn't have gone yourselves.
Lever, Not everyone who went to Vietnam got killed. And Muhammad Ali, even if he entered into the Army, would have never seen Vietnam, as he would have been offered a position in a support-base in Germany, Japan, Australia, Hawaii or anywhere in the United States. In other words,,,,,,,, a cake position. Damn fools, Ann-Margaret was in Vietnam for 6-months, For God's sake. And so was Raquel Welch, Joey Heatherton, Jane Fonda and Jayne Kennedy. Last I heard, they're all doing fine.
I write this in a calm state of mind. Honestly, it's often hard for me to understand how people CAN like Ali. I've tried for nearly forty years to like him, but it just doesn't sink in. My impression was that he was essentially a selfish person, didn't care who he abused or what unfairness he employed, as long as ultimately he got his way. He bent the rules, the judges and refs were too in awe to do much about it, and his manager has openly bragged about cheating in at least two major fights. I'm charmed by none of it. I will say this, though: I've never heard any stories of Ali shunning or abusing the fans. He's always been great with them, I'll admit. Some of my dislike I will admit is rooted in the blind worship bestowed upon him by so many. They made him a saint, a guy who could be very sweet one minute, but relentlessly cruel the next. If some of the coverage was more balanced, I might find Ali more palatable, but I simply do not really buy him as a humanitarian, saint, or beloved figure.
