If I was Dawson i'd be chasing after Calzaghe. It's not as if Calzaghe intends on staying around much longer, so Chad may aswel take the chance to fight JC while he can. If he can't get the fight with him, then he can't get the fight. Hopkins, Erdei, Johnson, Cloud, Diaconu, Woods, Braehmer/Garay. Plenty of fights left for Dawson to take. But Calzaghe is the dream fight.
Calzaghe is a dream fight for all the fighters you mentioned, including plenty of others from 168 lbs, and not least Hopkins, Kessler, etc. Why does Dawson deserves to have his dream realised more than others do? Why should Calzaghe not retire for Dawson of all people. In my view, there's no reason he should. If Calzaghe had one more fight in him, I think he should fight Hopkins again, and beat him clearly. This is the big legacy fight, in my view. If he wants to fight someone he hasn't beaten before, there are a good few names that come to mind, beside Dawson.
If he can beat Dawson impressively it would be at worst his second best win and at best his number 1 win, so i don't see where it doesn't improve his legacy.
How is beating Hopkins or Kessler again BIGGER then beating Dawson, the guy who is the only other fighter with the claim as best @ 175. Kessler isn't even @ 175, and has not done as much as Dawson. You seem to want Joe to fight ANYONE but Dawson. Are you afraid he may lose or something?
It would be a great win if he did. Many of those who DON'T want him to fight Dawson think it's because Dawson isn't a big enough name. Sounds pretty familiar doesn't it?
Kessler has done more than Dawson. Kessler is a 2 time world champion, and has already been a unified champion. He has also faced and looked good against Calzaghe and easily beaten Mundine and Andrade.
Kessler has beaten Sartison and Haussler since losing to Joe a year ago. Not exactly tearing the world up is he? Hopkins has a good claim after humiliating Pavlik. Erdei is linear champ but that win would be derided straight off the bat if Calzaghe were to fight and beat him. The rest are prospects/fringe contenders. Dawson has the best claim of the lot, including Hopkins, to get a fight with Calzaghe. Again though. If JC decides to retire, then so be it. I'd just prefer for him to fight Dawson before he did.
I disagree. Dawson is still unproven. How could it be Calzaghe's second best win, given that he has already beaten Hopkins and Kessler? At best, it would be his third best win, but only assuming Dawson is indeed as good as his fans make him out to be and assuming he does indeed perform very well on the night against Calzaghe. Even as his third best win it would be stretching it; let us not forget Calzaghe beat Reid and Mitchell and that he gave an amazing performance against Lacy.
Agreed and seconded. Notably the main question has already been discussed in extenso in a different thread: http://www.eastsideboxing.com/forum/showthread.php?t=102858
Kessler has achieved much more than Dawson has, and has proven to be a better fighter. Dawson could be better, but he hasn't proven it. Instead, he showed plenty of weaknesses. Dawson is the third best 175 lbs fighter, after Hopkins. Until he beats Hopkins, why would he have a better claim to be the no. 1 challenger, with Hopkins still around? I would like Calzaghe to go on too. I would like him to rematch Hopkins first, then fight Dawson, if Dawson is still considered the third best 175 lbs fighter, and then fight the best fighter at 168 lbs, whether Kessler or Bute or whomever, at 175 lbs, of course.
Dawson is relatively proven, almost as much as Kessler was when Calzaghe beat him. And as for Hopkins, Calzaghe struggled to beat Hopkins and got knocked down, and Hopkins is well into his forties.
