Ok, I might be wrong here. However, hunting for quotes I found this one... From Joe III 2006. Mikkel Kessler is a good fighter, he's undefeated and probably a better fighter than Beyer but then again, does Kessler mean that much outside of Denmark? These are the things that have to be looked at. Funny, that sounds strangely familiar. Yet the fight happened, and he got credit for it... Why not do it again?
And that to me and quite a few others here, and to Calzaghe himself, is the bottom line. There's always going to be someone else*...but eventually Calzaghe will have to retire. This is as good a time as any, whilst he still has his health and whilst he is still enjoying what he's doing and whilst he can leave with a smile on his face and no regrets... *(What if, hypothetically, Froch beats Pascal and then fights and beats Kessler, giving two very impressive performances? Won't Calzaghe have to fight him too, after Dawson? What if Dirrell or Ward beat Bute and Taylor in the meantime, very impressively? Won't Calzaghe have to fight Dirrell or Ward too? And on and on it goes...forever...until someone eventually does beat him...) :good
If he feels he need to retire, so be it. I think it would be a shame and a waste - because he clearly has something left. And, quite frankly, I think that's what's stopping him... But ultimately it's his life and his decision - I can live with whatever he decides to do
I saw my boy Adamek unable to do anything for the first 6-7 rounds - till Dawson lost focus and got put on his ass... Sad but true. Brutal not literally, but in the same sense as Lacy - Calzaghe. Ownage. Tarver then got the benefit of the doubt again after Woods, who was coming off a good win over Gonzalez (which, given Cloud's recent performance might look less impressive - I freely admit). Who are the fighters who are also performing? I think he just called one out, right? Give the boy a chance :yep
Joe would prob beat Dawson. I think he's proved himself as the top dog at light heavy. It's a shame that he hasn't been running with the elite for some years and has left us to judge his merit at the highest level on a few spurious fights. But I'm prepared to admit he has established himself as a great fighter and a HOF'er. He's done enough. Well done Joe.
Which is surely a good reason to make the Dawson fight quickly (it's not like he's been punished by RJJ) and retire before the other guys get a chance to establish themselves.
Calzaghe smashed an old Roy, and Dawson smashed an old Tarver. Calzaghe looked better doing so but Dawson beat the two guys who humiliated Jones more so than Calzaghe. Not saying Dawson would win but it would be interresting. I would lean toward Cal but you never know.
Yea i know but im jus stating that both guys are good fighters and it would be interesting to see them fight.
No, I didn't ask for a comparison. And all you basically said was Kessler going to their home turfs made those wins bigger or MORE then what they actually were. And that's just good, solid wins over mere contenders. I know while they may have had belts, they STILL are only contenders to the one real champ, in this case which was Calzaghe. How can those wins compare favorably when Dawson beat the more accomplished guys then who Kessler beat? It's not rocket science.
In a word, Jealousy, and downright negativity some people really cant stand calzaghe and want him to be beaten. And will go with whom ever poses the biggest threat to his 0 they just don't like winners and will pick holes and criticize just as they did mayweather. Calzaghe became their next target when Mayweather retired. The ironic thing is that Dawson without them knowing it, is their new target after Calzaghe retires.
If Dawson fights Calzaghe, Dawson will need to take a massive paycut, and Calzaghe will get the better share, most likely 70% of it (kind of like the Diaz-Pacquio match). But Dawson is willing to fight Calzaghe in Wales, so that will help generate revenue. HBO, Showtime, and Gary Shaw will need to help promote the fight. If all that gets done, than I see the fight happening.
