This is a 5 star post. Admittedly, I am guilty of some of the ignorance you mention concerning less aesthetically pleasing fighting styles, I will try to understand circumstances of era more when evaluating fighters in future. Post more please.
Here is an interesting article on how Marciano generated all that power and the opinion of his opponents, Louis, Wallcott, Starza, Moore, Charles, concerning Marciano's power. https://www.facebook.com/fighterfitgym/posts/10153564029049108:0
I wrote an article on Marciano http://imgur.com/gallery/xn2lt and made a video of the Moore fight with my commentary This content is protected
The better question would be why the love for Marciano? Why do his stupid fans still act like what he did was impressive? A loser 180 pound guy who whole career is based on him beating washed up has beens, mob controlled fighters and bums. It is like praising Charles Martin and pretending he did something amazing. Another question would be why do Marciano's stupid fans still believe a 180 pound club fighter like Marciano could beat Lennox Lewis, George Foreman, Mike Tyson, Wladmir Klistchko and others.
You don't "ramdomly" pick Cooper when there are so much bigger names to pick. You picked Cooper to make Ali's opposition look worse than what it was, at least compared to Rocky. You would have the same gripe if LaStarza was used as a yardstick on Marciano's behalf. Then you make excuses for Liston and Patterson to make Ali's victories over them less impressive. All the while whining over how Marciano is disliked... I'd say that you are the one with the dislike for a fighter.
Yeah, the race perspective, from both sides, seems to influence heavily on how many view Marciano. A suspicion that seems somewhat validated by some posts here. I agree with you that Marciano had skills that aren't as obvious to the eye as, say, Ali's. Personally, I'm not interested in hypothetical match-ups, but I can't help raise an eyebrow over those who take offence over the quite straightforward conclusion that he would be too small to compete with the very best of today. What counts for me, anyway, is that he did as well as he could during his own time. He beat the best of the post-WWII HWs and those were the ones around to fight. He never ducked anyone and beat the most relevant fighters during his relatively short time at the top. Nothing to dislike about that, really.
For many years I was not a Marciano advocate. However my beliefs concerning Marciano were not built upon watching him fight. Marciano is universally considered an ATG hwt champion. He is placed at that level as he exhibited ATG characteristics. He trained like a gladiator for his bouts, lived cleanly, came back to win in bouts where he was losing and or hurt, fought all comers and retired as our ONLY undefeated hwt champion. Why some want to disrespect such an outstanding example of a hwt champion one can only guess. All hwt champions should strive to be at his level.
I'm not arguing over it. I told you that you can put whoever you want in place of Cooper. This is like the 6th time I said it. Sheesh are you on your period?
Lets say in the year 2067 we have a heavyweight champion, we'll call him heavyweight X. Heavyweight X is 7'3 335 pounds of lean muscle at 3 percent bodyfat. He'd dwarf a bodybuilder like Dorian Yates or Ronnie Coleman. His physical strength would put top level SHW powerlifters to shame. He had the speed of a prime RJJ. The boxing skill of a prime Ray Robinson. The workrate of a prime Henry Armstrong. His two handed punching power made Foreman's power look like that of a HS prom queen. Mike Tyson on the primest day of his prime would be laughed out of the gym if he tried to be a sparring partner for heavyweight X. Lennox Lewis and the K2 brothers would be demolished in 1 round. Anthony Joshua by 2067, an old man in his late 70s, thanks God that heavyweight X wasn't around in 2017. Now, would the mere existence of heavyweight X mean that Tyson or Lewis or the K2 brothers etc. weren't great fighters? Especially in their own eras? Of course not.
No seven foot hwt has the speed of Ali or Jones. For every advantage of great size there is a negative. A great fighter who can effectively fight out of a crouch negates a seven foot tall hwt height. Very difficult to punch down and In process the larger hwt has to open himself up for counters.
There's never a good reason to bring race into discussions like these, but the fact is that it's a very important factor for why many fans feel a certain way for certain fighters. Ali and Marciano might be the two prime examples.
