Why the double standards?For Bute-Froch and Calzaghe-Lacy?

No it wasn't all Joe's fault.

But Hopkins was a 160 fighter anyway. Between the Eubank fight and the Kessler one, there wasn't much quality there, apart from the odd exception.

Roy, Tarver and DM were all up at 175 between those years.

I don't know if he'd have beaten Pavlik in the same manner, but I think he'd have beaten him.

I think Hopkins would have beaten Lacy too.

This is actually a really good comparison.

Both Lacy and Bute fought non-descript competition for their title reigns. Both were fairly dominant against the weaker opposition. Both had iffy wins prior to their step up (Sheika, Andrade). And, it seemed to me, both assumed they could just do what they always did against the weaker opposition and that would be good enough when they stepped up (no gameplan).

There are a couple of reasons why this isn't quite a double standard(yet). For one, Carl Froch was coming off a pretty lopsided loss to Andre Ward and British media were more focused on "maybe Froch has been in too many wars, maybe he's starting to slip" rather than "wow, this Andre Ward guy is pretty good". So going from being routed by one undefeated champ to fighting another didn't seem too promising. Calzaghe going into the Lacy fight was still undefeated. Although Calzaghe was a slight underdog against Lacy(Froch was a bigger underdog against Bute), its different when a guy is coming off a bad loss.

Secondly, and this is the most important reason, and has already been mentioned, Bute's career is not over yet. In some ways Joe was a victim of his own success in regards to Lacy because Lacy went on to do nothing after that fight and really hadn't done much prior to his fight with Joe to begin with. Bute hadn't done a whole lot before Froch (other than rack up more defenses than Lacy) but maybe with the fight being stopped it allows him to keep enough of his career intact to rebound. Who knows, maybe Bute wins another belt and does well? That would make it look even better for Froch. But if he does nothing ever again, than it's right there with Calzaghe as a great "perception win".
