Lawrence looked pretty good in that fight. He has Iron balls for sure to take those those low blows. He has a nice right uppercut.

 

Boxrec's compueterised rating system makes for some seemingly odd selections. But when you look at how the ratings work it becomes apparent that there really is no simple accurate way of programming such a system without the human element coming into play. I was checking out the welterweights on Boxrec recently and I notived that there was a fighter in the top 10 that I had never heard of before. At first I thought it was a calculation error but when I checked his record according to their system it was accurate.

 

Joval... probably. And not even close to 'awesome', but more like 'up there' :yep

 

Well, he wasn't p4p elite or anything but he was a warrior through and through and skilled enough to hang around in a decent era for his weight range without ever really getting embarrassed.

I thought he was awesome.

 

Don't forget you need to be f*ckin' great to pull that 'haircut' (if you can call it that) of his off. As far as I know he only once fought for a major title (and lost).

But we are a small country with no boxing history whatsoever, so I can't be too picky

True, he didn't have a lot of moments on the 'big stage' beyond the loss to Vargas...but that was still close to a prime Vargas (short as that prime was), and as I said, while losing clearly Ray held his own and gave a respectable account of himself.

He also had decent wins at the B- level. (Soliman, Taylor, Hernandez).

Was physically and mentally tough (got up and fought back hard every time he was ever dropped) and had a bit of skill (Olympic pedigree :deal) and a machinelike work rate - just no real stopping power.

Also a very, very good guy - gave huge chunks of his purses to charity, teaches young kids how to box..

A shitload better an ambassador for the Dutch in the sport than freaking Hersisia. :yep
