I think he's brilliant, too. People hate him because he's too confident in the ability of his fighters, despite him being right 100% of the time.
Here's a good article... http://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/more-sport/boxing/2010/12/10/amir-khan-is-great-for-my-health-freddie-roach-115875-22773614/
He is a very astute trainer and whilst he may say some things out of the ordinary he is possible one of the most sought after coaches today.
He is often incredibly disrespectful to other fighters. I don't care that he is an arrogant *****, I am fine with that. But I can't stand a disrespectful arrogant *****.
If you take that out of context it is pretty funny. Indeed, Freddie Roach does have the Ali "gift". Worst present ever...
with alot of success and media exposure comes alot of hate. the more opportunities that you are given to spout off, the more likely it is that you will say something stupid, which Roach does on occassion. Hate is fine but the ****s who make fun of his illness and wish him dead should **** right off.
That's exactly the case with Roach. A lot of attention (and criticism) is thrust upon him and his fighters, which requires him to respond in kind. His job and responsibility has evolved to a point where he can no longer remain the discreet, modest person we prefer him to be.
The clip of him and Floyd Sr in the ring with Jim Lampley was cracking. Shows you, neither Floyd or Freddie really has anger against one another, they're both pretty fking brilliant in their own ways. Actually, I think Freddie finds Floyd Sr kind of entertaining. He's said he likes Floyd and his father, but can't stand the uncle.
That interview will forever be remembered as a classic. Despite Roach getting the better, Floyd Sr was pretty funny in it also. And you're right, the interview showed the beef between the two - at the time - was nothing more than competitive banter. Floyd Sr even shows hints of admiration and respect. My favourite part was: Lampley: "So when the fight's over, will you two go back to being friends?" Roach and Floyd Sr (at the same time): "We've never been friends!" But I get the feeling it would be far more heated if they met now. Since the Pacquiao-Mayweather issue began after the Cotto fight, Floyd Sr has directed some seriously disparaging remarks towards both Roach and Pacquiao.
I take trainers' statements with a grain of salt. They're tactician and part of the game is deception and intimidation. As long as they are talking about fighting and topics around it and nothing personal it's all good. Trainers such as Roach, Nazim, Roger and Floyd Sr. are colorful characters I find entertaining to watch and hear them talk. They know their game.
Mostly because he's successful & in the media a lot. And he does talk a lot. I can see how he rubs people the wrong way. Roger Mayweather does the same to me. Floyd Sr I can deal with cuz he's so kooky.
