Right?! That was one very I’ll thought out move Maybe Mikey got over confident when he beat Lipinets at 140
Daring to be great involves testing the limits of confidence, heart, balls and belief, Mikey bit off more than he could chew, he wasn't as good as he thought he would be at 147, but the only way somebody daring to be great is going to find out how great they are is by testing them selves to these kind of limits, mikey believed in himself so much he thought he could do it, if he had never tested these waters he would forever have wonder what if? Boxing is a brutal sport, just because somebody is willing to dare to be great and has the most heart doesn't mean they will be as great as they thought they would. Very few are willing to take that risk, and that's because there is a chance it can end like this. For mikey the chance to be great was clearly worth the risk of finding out you were not what you thought. Mikey however still is great in his own right, He can still make history and go down as one of the best in his natural weight class, 147 was just a leap to far but you have to respect the man for wanting to test him self like this. That is what the greats do, and some greats will even say, i failed this time but i can come back in the future and still be a 147lb champ, or i believe i can still beat errol spence, Some people will say now you are getting deluded, but some fighters just have that kind of mentality of unbreakable faith and come back better and stronger, some fighters will never be the same and their confidence and belief is shattered for ever more. once in a generation a fighter will come and defy all of the odds and the glory they will experience will be beyond measure. The sad part is many will fail on that same road and many will be too fearfull to travel that same road after seeing what happend to all the people before them, But once in a generation or once in a life time somebody will beat all the odds.
I think the extra weight affected his movement and speed more than he thought it would. He believed he could beat Spence, but in a situation like that you never really know until you try. Being unbeaten in 39 fights, and with all the success he has had in his career would make him a supremely confident person, and a mentality like that can take you a long way, but everyone has limits. Last night Mikey found his limit. Deserves a lot of respect for stepping up and hanging in there for the full 12. Hopefully this fight hasn't caused any long-term damage.
Why not. A $3 million purse and a shot at the IBF champ at 147 would’ve been dumb to turn down. Besides Loma 135 has nothing to offer and I doubt Arum is even interested in making the fight and 140 would be a waste of Mikey’s time. Mikey is more than good enough to be a top 10 147 fighter and will make more at 147 as opposed to going back down 140 or 135. Mikey and Robert obviously seen Spence as a green fighter who’s defense isn’t the best, but they clearly underestimated Spence, since Mikey relied too much on countering Spence and didn’t make any adjustments.
He had 10 million reasons not to according compubox, I feel he may get pugilistic dementia at the end of his career, he had a completely basic defense in there.
I think it was a money grab. If you don't have any power at 140 what makes you think you will have any power at 147, especially enough power to fend off a much bigger Spence? Mikey doesn't have the reach like Mayweather where he was able to move up in weight and use his reach and skills to continue to dominate w less power.
