Why the hell did jimmy young's management let him fight shavers?

I read shavers biography and it seems young was a prospect training at the same gym as Frazier. When Frazier met Shavers, he had a lot of praise for his fellow gym mate (also from Philly) and gave Shavers advice on how to beat Jimmy.

But the elephant in the room is WHY on earth would Young who had a record of 7-3 and just 24 years old fight a dangerous puncher in a win streak who won 42 fighs, 41 by KO?! That would NEVER happen in todays era. As a matter of fact even in their era i dont think this was common practice as prospects like ali, Frazier, and mathis were alal brought along slowly against mediocre competition until they had at least 12-13 solid wins under their belt.

Did jimmy desperately need the money? Did he have horrible managers, or were they THAT confident in Jimmy's defensive skills and didnt take Shaver's record seriously? I cant find any info on the context of this bout.

It didn't really hurt his career.

He bounced back and even held Shavers to a Draw in the rematch.

They probably thought he could outslick the plodding, one dimensional Shavers.

Also, look at Ernie's record up to the first Young fight.

He hadn't really beaten anyone of note

    His record was overinflated.

An idiotic move on his management's part, but it may have been the grit in the oyster's shell that produced the pearl that was Jimmy Young...Defensive Master. It was the catalyst that helped transform Young's style.

Shavers was a great guy. Ali gave him advice on how to beat Young, too, almost everyone he interacted with liked him. He even remained friendly with Don King an his wife. Think about that.

When he hung em up he was broke and ended up selling meat door to door in "the hood" a he put it. He never let it get him down. It's a life as well lived as any i've read about in boxing an he even has kind words for his string of ex wives.

I mean i get if he needed the money but...a loss in his last fight and a year if inacticity then you fight a ko artist on a win streak? Seems pretty desperate to me lol.

This would be like if Filip Hrgovic lost his next fight then decided to take on wilder.

That actually makes sense. He got hit by the puncher of the decade and it made him appreciate defense!

I like Earnie's bio. I thought it was really good. Very honest.

Jimmy Young didn't have "management" at that time. That's the answer. He was just a guy for Shavers to fight. When he (Young) started to improve, an elderly Blinky Palermo (trying to get back in the game) moved in.

One of the more interesting things in Earnie's bio was that George Foreman's team called Earnie and asked if he wanted to fight Foreman, but only if he (Earnie) agreed to take a dive.

I'm surprised that never gets brought up anywhere.

Hi Red! Couldn't agree more! I'm not sure of this but the 'scuttlebutt' I've heard (don't think the fight is available to view) is that Earnie dropped him 3 times in the round forcing the stoppage; Jimmy wasn't face down in a puddle, given that's true it certainly wouldn't tarnish the defensive master's legacy.
I love Shavers; he did attend Jerry's funeral as did Mac Foster if memory serves correct.

He still is a great guy. If I am not mistaken, he is still alive. Hoping to see him again at the IBHOF weekend this June.

Maybe Young simply took a chance, took his shot while it was there.

Earnie is a great guy he remained friends with Tex Cobb, after their fight. Tex wife at the time told me Earnie was staying with them for a few days EARNIE CAME IN TEARS ROLLING DOWN HIS FACE WITH A LITTLE CAT IN HIS HANDS THAT HAD BEEN HIT BY A CAR. please say its not dead Sharon he said the cat wasn't seriously hurt more scared and winded than hurt. She said Earnie beamed when the little cat got up on his lap he was so happy. Sharon said There was one of the most feared hardest punching HW so soft hearted over a little cat

I always liked Earnie, doesn't get the respect he deserves. Always came across as a class guy. And damn, another animal lover, can it get any better???
