Because apparently if you fight Collazo you are on your way to fighting Mayweather according to a few on here
An absolute farce and I can't even think how Thurman reacted to the news, especially when nobody has an impressive victory recently except for Thurman himself against Guerrero...
It's a stay busy fight, not too many available that they'd be willing to split the pot with promotion-wise.
What has Guerrero done at WW to be considered a good win there. Berto is his only good win at the weight :conf
Didn't Brook, the IBF champion, just fight an absolute hopeless can?. This is a good stay-active fight for Thurman. There are many big names in his division and he's already getting good enough attention. Staying active will further improve his chances.
Like someone else pointed out, Brook had a stay busy fight. Khan just fought Algieri. Pacquiao made us pay to watch him fight Rios & Algieri FFS. Is Thurman not allowed a stay busy fight?
It's more about how he beat Guerrero than Guerrero's resume, it was a great fight but Thurman still dominated him in more appeasing fashion than Floyd. Khan looked brilliant against Alexander (best win of the lot who are trying to fight Floyd atm), he looked poor against Algieri and got banged up. Garcia has not even reached 147 yet and had a close knit affair with Peterson, lost to Herrera and Salka was ridiculous. Brook has fought nobody since Porter, who hadn't really beaten anybody but Malignaggi (one could ask who has Malignaggi beat) and Alexander... so I guess you can say Guererro is an impressive win in comparison to the rest. Katsidis, Aydin and Berto aren't show stopping names but they are decent enough and his floyd association just like Algieri's Pacquiao association. Many think Algieri lost to Provodnikov too but the manner of him coming back overshadows it, so the Guerrero win being a bruising encounter even though he never looked like beating Thurman, is impressive.
:nod Correct. I, for one, would rather see good fighters that I enjoy watching fight more often rather than less often. Would I rather see Thurman-Collazo AND another better fight involving Thurman later in the year or just the one good fightlater in the year? Same goes for Brook-Gavin/Dan and a bigger fight coming later in the year. I'm all for the fighters I like fighting 4 times a year instead of 2 as long as they still end up getting in their with the same number of top quality opponents. Khan is tougher to make excuses for because Thurman and Brook would both happily have fought him instead of their much derided opponents but we all know what angle Amir is playing here.
The main gripe everybody has is Floyd fights in September, Collazo wouldn't get him Mayweather since his only decent win is Guerrero, and this is too close to September as well surely. It kills any momentum, if we remove Mayweather being an opponent it's okay as a stay busy.
Doesn't Thurman want to earn a title shot by challenging himself and facing adversity ? It seems like he just wants to face a bunch of washed up, under sized fighters and get a title handed to him.
I'm sure Thurman would fight anybody, just watch his interviews, it's the grand master plan by Haymon to take over without getting UD'd by Mayweather.
I see what you are saying, but I consider Chavez a better win than Guerrero at WW for Thurman. As for Guerrero's WW resume. Berto is a solid win at WW. But Aydin very clearly lost the first fight with Jo Jo Dan and was given a gift. And Dan was written off as a joke opponent for Brook (even though he was a mando - blame the IBF rankings, not the fighter). Katsidis was not at WW, that was the Ghost's last fight at LW. Guerrero's only other WW win is over Kamegai - who is lacking a top 25 win himself. I agree that the manner of the win was impressive. There just isn't really enough evidence to suggest to me that Guerrero is a particularly good WW. I also consider the Brook win over Porter to be a better one than the Khan win over Alexander considering that Porter beat Alexander to win the IBF title that he later lost to Kell. And Porter's wins at WW over Devon and Paulie put his WW resume ahead of Devon's for me who has Maidana and Soto Karass as his best 2.
