This obviously comes as a response of people calling for Cotto's retirement.

The dude is 29 (just turned) so his best years are ahead of him, he fought a great fight against a great fighter. He had only 2 defeats.... Jake Lamotta had numerous defeats and was crushed in worse fashion by SRR than Cotto was and he fought on, gatti got hammered even when he won and he had 9 losses all in all and fought on even when defeated by the lieks of Ivan Robinson x2. Holyfield took a hammerin from Bowe in there first fight and cameback stronger! Terry Norris got starched by Julian Jackson and came back stronger!

i agree there seems to be this link with manny's victims suddenly being labelled as garbage and should just retire...we are talking about one of the greatest fighters in history no disgrace in being beaten at that level. yes hatton may not be at manny and floyds level but he is a world class fighter ffs as is cotto and DLH.it's just that the gap between world class and elite appears to be huge at the moment..

you can rest assured that if manny vs floyd takes place there will be calls for the loser to retire.....pleeeeeeeease just get a grip

I dont know. I think its how they lose... If your an elite fighter you cant lose the way Cotto lost so alot of people think he should retire. I dont think so.

it's almost as if some people think that there is only room for elite fighters in the sport who let's face it come around once in every 10 years !!! cotto has faced the best in his weight and beat the best, if he wants to take a title again i'm sure he could still do it. you can't judge performances based on how each fighter handles manny.

Because the guy has taken alot of punishment and when he gets beat it's really bad kinda like Jermaine Taylor. Not to mention who is he going to beat at the top? Not Pac, not PBF not Shane. He could beat some lower level guys but what would it really mean? He's used to being at the top. I say he cut his losses and get out with a farewell fight.

    1. He should take a vacation for a few months with his family.
    2. Then, come back with a tune-up/confidence builder.
    3. Then, he could fight someone like Kermit Cintron in a Puerto-Rican friendly venue on free TV.
    4. If he wins that, by that time Margarito should have a couple wins under his belt...revenge/redemption fight vs. Margarito.

Even though Cotto may not be regaining a title at 147 for the forseeable future, he still has a path in boxing. I still think he's got plenty left in the tank too.

You claim his best days are ahead of him?? maybe in LIFE.... but not inside the ring.

Hes taken tremendous beatings on MORE then one occasion.

Torres, Margarito, Mosley, Pac, Clottey all were grueling, hard fights..... and he was brutally ground down and stopped in two of those.

what exactly, outside of money, is the point of him continuing fighting?

you know what? i said Mayorga should retire after the oscar fight.... people said THE SAME **** your saying now, mayorga kept on fighting, and will probably keep on fighting, for WHAT besides money?

i said vargas should retire after he fought castillejo, people said im overreacting, blah blah blah.... he kept on fighting, for what? did he enhance his legacy? what did he do? got progressively worse and cought a brutal knock out loss.

I am not a fan of fighters just continuing to fight for no reason.... this is their lives, family and friends getting battered in there every time they get abused like that. Cotto doesnt need the money, cotto at his peak beat mosley, but barely.... i dont think todays cotto could, and i see nothing that makes me think he would beat margarito in a rematch (i thought he could, but if anything he handles pressure worse now then he did) he obviously cant beat pac and i actually think the safest fight out there is mayweather for him but mayweather isnt going to fight him because theres nothing to gain from it now.

Cotto should continue? why.... so he can beat a few mid level top 10's and then in a year or two get beat down in another big fight? Cotto is better then that and shouldnt let his name be used like that, a fighter should know when hes not the same as he once was, and if hes not going to do anything to right the ship then he should call it a career.

This is coming from me caring about him, his legacy and his future..... and not just wanting to see what cool fights can be made.

If Cotto wants to continue, then he needs to go soul searching.... and needs to be smart enough to know what hes doing wrong in both training camp and inside the ring. He needs to work on his once polished skills, and learn to stick to gameplans inside the ring. He will need to start winning more on his intelligence and experience in the ring instead of breaking down his opponents. Cotto is not at 140 anymore, his opponents will be big, strong men with good chins who all can hurt him..... hes on the wrong side of his best and has taken bad beatings, i just dont see the point in continuing for money and a few decent names to add on to his resume.

Retire, enjoy the kids, the wife, the times.... hes already proved himself a warrior and has been in the ring with this generations best and has nothing to be ashamed of, hes beaten sugar shane mosley, clottey, quintana, torres, ect.... and lost to margarito in a questionable loss and was beat by one of the best fighters of this generation.

Whatever he decides i will support him, and be in his corner..... doesnt mean i dont have my own opinion and that is that he should just call it a career.

Again, i dont like when fighters just aimlessly fight on......

if he proves me wrong id be very happy, but how many fighters continue to fight on when they shouldnt? always thinking that next time they will be better.

Cotto is not a journeman who fights on because this is how he makes his living, cotto has made his money.
Cotto is not the fighter continuing to search for his defining fight... cotto has fought those already.
Cotto is not someone who needs to fight because straight up they just love it and thats what they were born for.... he is indeed awaiting retirement.

whatever he decides i will support..... but i think he really needs to do some soul searching.

It just depends on how you lose. Hatton who goes up and down in weight after each fight and then the way he lost to Mayweather damaged him. Then the fight with Pacquiao didn't end well. That's why people call for Hatton's retirement. Then you have Cotto who took on somebody with bricks for 11 rounds and took massive punishment. Then, against Pacquiao it looked like the same fight minus the bricks. It's just the massive punishment these two fighters have taken in two fights which calls for their retirement.

There's a difference between losing a fight here and there and they Cotto has recently been beaten to a pulp. The kind of wear on him is much more important then the amount of time it's been accumulated over.

There's a few more things he can do in the division over the next two-three years but he doesn't need it and he's certainly never going to eclipse what just happened.

He's clearly not the same fighter...His punches, with the exception of the jab, don't seem as powerful, he no longer has that killer instinct. He had Pacquiao up on the ropes and failed to capitalize. If it was Trinidad instead of Cotto, having Pacquiao on the ropes like that, all I'm gonna say is good night pac....

I think he should retire from mega fights for now. Beat B plus A minus fighters get a belt and progress back in. He should not pull a Taylor or Lacyy and just keep getting beat over and over. Then he should retire. He should do what RJJ does. Lose twice and everyone says retire. Then rack up a bunch of winds against credbible fighters in easy fashion and then jump back into sold out MGM PPV mega fights.
