Learning how to stop takedowns (it's more than just sprawling you know) is a skill that is learned slowly over many many years of hard work, just like throwing boxing combinations or bobbing and weaving. "All he needs to do" makes me think that you've never tried to stop someone from taking you down who has worked on it with the same level of dedication and training as guys like Toney learned boxing. The reason that Liddell could do what he did is because he was a college wrestler who had the reflexes to be able to hold his hands lower to help stuff takedowns and still not get caught with punches until he got older, lost he reflexes and now gets hit with everything. Just because you're not familiar with something doesn't mean that it's simple and "all you have to do" is pick it right up over a few weeks and you'll be fine. It would take Toney as long to learn takedowns and stuffing takedowns at Couture's level as it would for Couture to learn to box at Toney's level, and what we've learned from MMA is that the grappling moves have a much higher percentage change of succeeding than striking ones do.

to those making smartass comments about my thread,

one...i have boxed for 12 years, i have brazilian jiu-jitsu for almost 5 years and i have wrestled in unversity for a bit.

so i clearly know more then most you when it comes to mma

now as far as street/bar fights go,

yes boxing and thai boxing are better there....why you ask?

most fights are very short, they are rarely one-one and going to the ground is a really stupid idea in them.

    to give you some examples,
i grew up in the ghetto, and worked as a bouncer as for close to 5 years, so i been in some fights and seen even more fights.

the guy who is throws the first punch usually wins, and a striker will be faster on the gun here.

    2. going on the ground is not smart, here is an example that i went through,

i took a guy down and put him a in choke, he took a huge bite of my arm and trust me i let go, i still have the damn scar on my forearm

my friend who was a very good wrestler took a guy down in a night club, before he got a beer bottle smashed on his face....

plus all the stuff about eye poking, biting, nut grabbing is very funny until it happens to you,

    that's not even mentioning weapons,

boxers almost always have great track records in street fights,

i love grappling and continue to practice it but i have been around enough to know that mma is not a real fight....

to the guy who talked about not breaking your hands, when your in a real fight, that's the last thing on your mind....

    all that being said,

this guy was probably a better wrestler then toney was ever as boxer....do you see any fine example of his legendry wrestling

I have full respect for the sport of mma to think a boxer could master takedown defense in mere weeks especially against someone like Couture. Bas Rutten didn't have any wrestling backround prior to competing in mma, but he dedicated himself training with a catch wrestler and ended up having a great career. If Rutten could do it why couldn't a boxer?

You got the point. It was impossible for Toney to counter a guy diving that low. Toney did not expect this kind of attack at all, he was totally surprsied. Toney may have been to counter effectively if Couture just shooted in or other forms of attack by Couture.Couture took the zero risk approach and he had every right to do so.

It is time for Toney to leave this black episode behind him, he has only to blame himself for what happened. The problem with talking trash is when you do not back it up....

I would like Toney to have one last boxing fight against a lesser opponent in Detroit and then retire. I am a boxing fan who watched live for the first time a UFC event. Although, the whole event was perfecty managed, I am just not interested in this sport.

    look at silva-maia

    grappling didn't rule then

fighting to your opponents weakness rules, and that is what couture did

  9. I couldnt think a worse style boxer for mma, toney fights mostly in the pocket. Seeing those long range body shots he was doing in training didn't look real convincing going up against a wrestler like randy.
