pretty simple, why would 5'9' tyson, while fighting people so much bigger than himself, fall into their trap of potshotting and clinching to drain his great stamina (in his prime), but trying to throw shots of clinches that would only be smothered?

tyson was too smart in his prime to do that stupid ****, pretty simple. prime tyson was an incredible, once in a lifetime specimen.

He was amazing in is prime.

They were showin a marathon of Tyson fights on ESPN2 on CHRISTmas eve.I sat and watched most of it.

He was a great champ and a very interesting person. And guess what, he still is

How in the hell is it not going to benefit Tyson by throwing shots when he's in close against a longer armed fighter!:patsch

The fact that Tyson did'nt work on this technique came back to haunt him against fighters who could tee off at him at will from distance!

his technique is never what hurt him, if anything that was his strength. Fighting in close is one thing, having someone tie your arms up and go chest to chest with you is another. Reread my first post. He was an AMAZING pucnhes in close.

Too many fighters neutralized Tyson's inside attack......

Bonecrusher Smith who was scared stiff, held and neutralized Tyson.
Tyson did'nt even attempt to fight out of clinches with Smith.

The way to make a fighter like Smith not try to get in close to clinch, is for Tyson to have let his hands go on the inside and force Smith not to......
.....but Tyson did 'nt even try fighting in close with Smith!

BS. Tyson always had reach disadvantage and it will be to his edge to fight close. When he did it against Holyfield in round 5, he looked great. Holyfield instantly let go of him after feeling Tyson's inside uppercuts and body shots. If Tyson kept it up, he would have won that fight.

In a word, it was laziness.
Tyson was always hyper and charged up for the opening bell, but often the fire dimmed a bit, and he would accept the clinch.

Tyson was brilliant at making his opponent miss and pay, because he was so quick, and so his strength was at distance, as he covered that first step better than anyone ive ever seen, and 99% of the time it was enough.

but had Tyson, as divac said, been far more aggressive inside, the Smiths, Holyfieds, etc wouldnt have beeb able to neutralise him by initiating clinches knowing he'd accept them.

This nonsense has to stop; Tyson was measured on HBO at 5'11 and 3/4" - and was always billed at 5'11".

I agree......Tyson had the perfect frame and body to be the best HW the world had ever seen...his mental state was perfect for a guy like Cus to imbed the raw essense of fighting and making the science 2nd nature to an impressionalbe and troubled Mike Tyson. I think his troubled past help Tyson engulf himself in boxing and actually made him a FIGHTING MACHINE. I honestly think a PRIME Tyson was the very best HW of all time....ALI in his prime was also something else b/c he was very fast, talented and more than anything SUPER intelligent...between the two its a toss up.

This was a weakness of Tyson. Tyson actually wasn't a great in-fighter. More often than not, Tyson liked a little bit of space to get his combos off. Not much, but he was never someone who just loved trench warfare. Watch his fights. He's not too effective when he's too close, because at his best, he was a combo puncher, so he had to step back a little. An elite fighter would see this and expose Tyson and make him uncomfortable.

Tyson was a great champion in his time. I think possibly the best HW ever? I used to really enjoy his fights. But without good guidance and a pack of ponces on his payroll he became an animal and a ******. Could not care less what happens to the rat now. Shame.
