The super six tournament coming up is absolutely going to be one hell of an event. There are a great mix of diverse fighters with great attitudes, and for the most part, at good places in their careers for something like this. To win something like this will take a very diverse fighter who can deal with all styles. This tournament will be very similar to rock, paper, scissors. Styles make fights. The most diverse fighter in this tournament is Andre Ward. For many of those same reasons he is also the most overlooked in this tournament. Here is why. Ward can switch swiftly and comfortably between right handed and southpaw stances. I believe he is actually left handed. His footwork is amazing if you ever actually pay attention to it. Footwork is not the kind of thing to catch the lamen's eye, such as power. Footwork, regardless, is a very important thing in boxing. As far as power goes, this would be his main weakness. His knockouts have mostly come from an accumulation of punishment, as he methodically breaks down each and every opponent routinely. His power will come with age as he is still quite young. Don't get me wrong, he can still snap heads back and will floor people occasionally. He does not sell out and leave himself open, which is an unattractive style to people who would rather see blood than us few who truly appreciate the art of "the sweet science". His handspeed is something almost no fan can possibly realizes because it is something that only fighters who have been in there with him can attest to, as well as the fact that they did not realize they were not ready to deal with the speed and had underestimated it. Ward's toughness is widely criticized. There is no lack of toughness here whatsoever. Ward is a bully in the ring. Several fighters have tried the rough tactics. They seem to **** Ward off more than anything. His chin is no longer in question. He can get up off of the canvas, and if anything, has learned from the one time he had to many fights ago. His focus and work ethic is tremendous. His boxing IQ is off the charts. He can go 12 so easily that he fights the 12th just like the 1st. Does anybody here ever talk about ring generalship? And, can he get just a tad bit of credit for the gold?
Great post - gotta admit not having watched Ward or Dirrell as much as the others- but will definetely be sure to review past fights based on that, as well as the pudwill fight comin up
Wooooohhh Olympic Gold ...Ward might do well in the Supper 6 but this is a bit over the top if you ask me and just for the record, Pro boxing is a complete different thing Believe me he'll get tested against the Viking Warrior :bbb...and I'm confident Kessler will be the winner.
Great points, he'll get the credit he deserves if/when he lives up to his great potential in the tournament.
He will not fight Saturday to impress, whether he does or not. He will simply fight to win. Notice the subleties.
I'm quite aware of the difference between the pros and amateurs. Like I said, Ward can go 12 with ease, he didn't pick that up in the amateurs. I've seen Ward go 12 in the gym and look more impressive than the 12 he went against Miranda. The Miranda fight was a good win, but a letdown by Ward's standards. Kessler and his fans will all be surprised and disappointed. Kessler can match very few of Ward's qualities. I've seen ALL of the fighters in this tournament fight. That is what I am basing my opinion on, unlike many who don't know the first thing about Ward, or Dirrell for that matter. FORGET TAYLOR FOLKS! Moving on.
Because shortly before the Super Six series was announced, Bute turned down a very lucrative offer to fight Froch for a WBC/IBF unification bout in Nottingham. This indicated to the Super Series organisers that Lucian Bute is a ***** and was clearly going to be unwilling to a) fight the very best in the division, and b) possibly fight in the other guy's backyard. So now Bute is out in the cold with only a rematch against a non-marquee fighter he's already beaten to look forward to:yep
ward isnt being overlooked. a lot of people on here, myself included, think he may be the goods. that doesnt mean he will beat kess, b/c i don't think he can at this stage of his career, but seems to be the real deal
I don't think he's is being overlooked, it's just his 1st fight isn't against such a devisive figure as Karl Froch or Arthur Abraham.
in case you haven't noticed, Andrade is ranked higher than Taylor, Dirrell, Ward and should be higher than Abraham, who did nothing yet at 168. Congratulations, you have just proved you're a stupid hater. Being proud and giving a rematch to a fighter who diserves it is not being a *****. Bute was not invited because Showtime wanted three American people and because the European promoters who organize the tournament took the three other spots for their guys. Read that as many times as you need to understand reality.
Ward is being a bit overlooked because the way he was moved forward in the pros, rather slowly, and that the Miranda fight is the only meaningful win of his on the top stage. But that doesn't mean he can't live up to the expectations, and I too feel people overlook his chances, as well as Dirrell's and Taylor's. Unfortunately for Ward, he's facing the best and most accomplished SMW in round 1, and it'll be one helluva task to overcome the great Dane.
:thumbsup definitely impressed by the guy. i think if he was a couple more years into his career he could potentially beat kessler. the only reason i don't think he will now is he's too green, but we will see.
