Why was Calzaghe beating Lacy considered such a big win for Calzaghe?

What did he have? 22 fights then decides to go in against a seasoned champion who probably thought was another"limey"walkover.Lacy knickers was supposed to be a real prospect wasn`t he? Marvin Haglar mentioned just before this fight that Calzaghe was top 5 p4p, noone told Lacy. I actually felt sorry for Lacy getting obsolutely kicked the **** out of,if them dicks in his corner pulled him out earlier they might of saved his career.

Just to add that Lacy wanted a rematch,Calzaghe said "Is that fool still concussed? That fight wasn`t even close".Jeff Lacy, what a wanker.

For the same reason virtually nobody can comprehend anything properly on these forums. Were the people asking this question following the sport at the time? You wouldn't need to ask if you were.

Could be worse than that tho. You could be a lemming. When the wind blows your perception changes.

It was a tongue in cheek comment Calzaghe made, understand? Lacy couldn`t find much leather to hit him with because he was talking it all then he bewilderingly started talking of rematches.

Calzaghe was underrated, Lacy was overrated.

Calzaghe was thought to be on the decline, Lacy was thought to be on the way up. Heavily hyped, was knocking dudes out right and left, Calzaghe was the last guy in his way for control of the division, and Calzaghe was not well known. All anyone knew about him was that he was a light puncher. Lacy was favored not only to win, but to knock Calzaghe out. Brutally.

And then Calzaghe beat him like a redheaded stepchild, didn't even bother to keep the shorter guy away from him, just walked right up in his face and beat him silly. It didn't even look like a fair fight at any point. Lacy literally never got anything going.

It's not just the nature of the win, it's the fact that every part of it is the last thing most people expected. If Calzaghe was gonna win, it was gonna be a close decision and a boring fight, not a shutout.

All you had to say was "I don't know if anyone was calling Lacy a hype job before he fought Calzaghe".

Gosh, anyone would think you've only been following boxing for a couple of years.

To the TS: It was a very big deal at the time because it was almost considered to be a foregone conclusion that Lacy was going to, not only beat Calzaghe, but wipe up the floor with him...not just the opinion of the fans, but of the sports writers across the globe. Even the majority of British felt that Calzaghe would lose. Some writers were calling Lacy, "the next Mike Tyson" and comparing him to a super hero.

Ridiculous now, but back then it was like wildfire. Lacy was high on everyones' list.
