Why was Calzaghe beating Lacy considered such a big win for Calzaghe?

it was only considered a 'big thing' to america because of their usual pathetic hyping up of their own fighters in combination with their usual narrow minded ignorance of anything outside their own country.

lacy was just another american hype alongside the likes of pavlik, tarver, ortiz, taylor, flores, arreola, dawson, alexander etc etc

We STILL believe he was a Protected fighter who built his record feasting on bums

    Aint nothing changed

As soon as they called Jeff Lacy "the next Mike Tyson" Thats when he became overrated

Because Lacy was way overhyped. Usually an undefeated young fighter who's aggressive and has power will always be hyped, don't forget that a lot of the hype has to do with the amount of fans he had. Calzaghe got a lot of credit because he was an unknown who had like 17 title defenses against super can quality opponents, so it's only reasonable for him to finally get some attention and finally prove people, who can't be blamed for not knowing him, wrong. On fight night this fight was 50/50 on the bookies.

simple, Lacy was on a roll, looked above average, and people hyped him up.

Lacy still has nightmares about the night he shared a ring with Joe.

The return of Jeff Lacy is still around the corner. The Dhafir Smith thing was a fluke because he knew his brother was up to no good and was worried about it.
Yes folks, it's true Jeff "What Hook" Lacy will rise to fame yet again.

Sorry pal,its great that you have an opinion on american fighters, but since the 80's(when i particuly started watching the sport)has the UK gave to offer an american fight fan that would take his attention away from watching the likes of...
    Duran,Leonard,Hagler,Hearns,Holmes,Pryor,Arguello,Mancini,Curry,Holyfield,Camacho
    Tapia,Julio Cesar Chavez,Rosario,Whitaker,Salvador Sanchez,M Taylor,Tyson,Azuma Nelson,James Toney,Roy Jones JR,Hopkins,Trinidad,De La Hoya,Pacquiao,Ricardo Lopez,E Morales,M A Barrera,Cotto,J L Castillo,Floyd Mayweather etc etc.Just off the top of my head.The list goes on and on and on,,,and on.And on again.

I think the reason for american fight fans to focus there attention striclty on american fighters is called being content.

The reason why the Euros pay so much attention to american fighters(fights)is not being content with what the UK has or had to offer.

The proof is in the pudding man.

i totally agree about the quality of the american fighter in the 80s and 90s because thats when i got into boxing and it was mainly from watching great american fighters like hagler, leonard, holmes, tyson who were all big heroes to me growing up, the same as mexicans like chavez and barerra.

however, mayweather aside, todays american fighters are hyped way beyond their means, far too early, whilst european fighters are massively under-estimated because of the narrow minded ignorance that 96.4% of americans suffer from, where they have absoloutely no idea about anything that happens outside their own country.

its not about 'not being content', its the annoyance of the narrow minded ignorance your country shows. its not just this calzaghe - lacy example

its stuff like hypejob alexander getting schooled off kotelnik

its stuff like chad dawson being ranked p4p number 3 through beating over-rated plodders like tarver and johnson

its stuff like rating andre ward number 6 p4p when his only decent win is over kessler who none of you ****ers even had in your top 15 p4p lists anyway and now ward beating him is suddenley good enough to place him at number 6

its stuff like hyping taylor up and then getting his ass kicked off froch and abraham

its stuff like the klits and haye being by far the best heavys and because all your heavys are proper dogshite, its suddenley a weak division.

It was a unification and Calzaghe's step up onto the world stage. A win would have been 1 thing, but a total domination really made people take notice.

I know Lacy was seriously overhyped, but I think the reason Calzaghe wasn't being favored was as much because the previous overall level of his competition.

    Calzaghe deserves credit.

Wait a minute, are we still talking boxing here?

94.6%..where did this % come from.

I still dont see your point. Why should american fight fans have taken there attention away from the great fighters they were already watching.

Half the fighters you talked about being hype jobs are still active and young,or have held major titles.

Pavlik-Former undisputed middleweight champ that lost to two great fighters in Hopkins(Kelly out of his element at 175)and martinez(i had the fight even going into the 9thround).

Tarver-Former light heavy champ and the first man to KO cold the great Roy Jones Jr.Who didnt Tarver fight. The guy fought everyone including R.Balboa.He also gave rematches, something Joe C would never do.(Except once i think).

Ortiz-The guys young, with plenty of potential to become something special in the sport.(was thrown in with Maidana and being the main event on the card that night way to soon).

Taylor-Former undisputed middleweight champ and the only man to beat the great B-Hop twice.

Dawson-Former light heavy champ that had a bad night against Pascal(very unfortunate for Dawson with the cut happening).Dawson will be back and i expect good thing from him.

Alexander-Didnt look good in the biggest fight of his career, but neither did Bradley IMO.I saw Devon doing some good things leading up to the final butt. He's another guy that has plenty left and is very young. My only question is why he would go to the score cards and quit.Devon had to know he wasn't ahead,or the fight was close.

    Flores/Arreola-Never knew they were hyped.

Not many thought Calzaghe would win. British boxing experts believed he was in decline and would come unstuck against Lacey. After Calzaghe dominated Lacey, the British "boxing experts" jumped on the Calzaghe bandwagon, "#1 Brit of All-Time", etc.

    It's not pathetic at all.

Joe Calzaghe fought B/C class Sheika... and Joe showed he was A-class by dominating and stopping him.

Jeff Lacy fought B/C class Sheika... and Jeff showed he was B/C class himself by struggling woefully with him and being very fortunate to escape with the decision.

If Lacy had produced great wins or performances against A/B class opponents in his career, I'd overlook Sheika as just an off-night, but he didn't IMO.

Conclusion: Calzaghe was A-class, Lacy never was at any point.

:patsch Tito being favourite to beat B-Hop was ONE of the THIRTEEN or so reasons I listed for Hopkins-Tito being a great win.

By contrast, whenever people say Calzaghe-Lacy was a great win the ONLY thing they seem to mention is the fact that Lacy was favourite to win with the US media in the build-up to the fight.

Calzaghe-Lacy was a good win and a great performance...

Pacquiao-De La Hoya was a problematic win but still a great performance...

Hopkins-Tito was a great win and a great performance...

That's why I had Hopkins-Tito in my top 5 wins of the decade, Calzaghe-Lacy somewhere much lower in my top 50, and Pac-Oscar didn't quite make the cut.

    :huh

Vanderpool didn't give B-Hop a hard night AT ALL.

    Hopkins beat him 118-109, 118-110 and 116-112.

By the time Lacy got the stoppage against him, Vanderpool was behind by only ONE POINT on two of the cards and three on the other.

I don't think comparing the performances of Lacy and Hopkins against Vanderpool is a particularly good way to promote Lacy's abilities.
