Why was Calzaghe beating Lacy considered such a big win for Calzaghe?

    Lacy was favourite

Lacy was arguably America best SMW of the decade. Debateable between Lacy and Mitchell in my opinion

It wasnt just a victory it was a one sided beating.

Lacy has a fair SMW resume with Sheika, Vanderpool, Pemberton, Tsypko, Manfredo and Reid

    Hope that helps

Because of BIG pre fight hype for Lacy from US media.
Lacy was supposed to destroy Calzaghe and knock him out
that was the expectation of most boxing "experts" ...

Because Lacy was arguably the world number 1 challenger and IBF champion at the time.

Like any great win prior to hindsight and revisionist history he was a big underdog picked by no experts and less fans

He took a guy and dominated him bell to bell and battered him and also out boxed he beat him in any possible facet

Also Lacy was a young hungry and hopeful fighter

after the pounding he had numerous injury set backs and that should in no way affect Joe's win

I love the "ah he was no good anyway" attitude that now hovers over this victory. People thought Lacy was going to destroy Calzaghe and the complete opposite happened to the point that Jeff really was never the same. I prefer to rate a win for what it meant at the time not for what a shot Lacy went on to not achieve afterwards.

what it meant at the time was important, you're right.

but if the "ah he was no good anyway" argument counts then so does the 'ah, well he was a good fighter but never did anything about it' arguement - referring to joe.

i dont like to play the if game but if he won vs Joe or lost but hadnt taken the kind of beating he did and then in his return bout didnt ruin his shoulder he may have materialized

im not saying this guy was ATG material and got his career ruined in 1 fight

but he had his chance to go somewhere and Joe kind of crushed his career he was never the same

    i agree with that 100%.
but joe beating lacy also gave him the chance to go somewhere...

lacy came to joe because joe was hands down the best SMW in the world, and that was all the exposure joe needed to hook up with US networks to pursue bigger fights.

he didn't do it, just like sturm, ottke, witter - and a graveyard of other skilled euro fighters chose not too.

so you're right, lacy had his chance to go somewhere - but that was joe's ticket too if he was serious about his career.

carl froch definitely made the most of his opportunity.
