Why was Canelo a big favourite to win?

I think that was plan A going into the fight but there was likely a plan B if Canelo didn't think his power was up to stopping Kov. The minute he landed a couple of left hands that stopped Kov in his tracks and shut down that right hand Canelo knew it was only a matter of time and traded rounds for the ko. It was an all or nothing for him. That being said though I think Canelo knows he could do that and still get the decision. I had Kov winning the fight but the scorecards at the end werent at all surprising to me. Still can't believe two judges had Canelo winning. smdh

    This is correct.

Kovalev has been looking slower and more vulnerable for years now. Canelo's team figured that all they really had to worry about was the jab but that they could make up lost ground with Canelo's flashy combos. The decision to dry Kovalev out killed his stamina which has never been very good since as far back as Chilemba. Kovalev is basically a fighter who has nothing left except a jab - still a good jab, but, really only that punch - and some footwork. He was never going to KO Canelo with just that and a KO is what he needed, as the released Vegas judge's scores now demonstrate. :fusmile

I too believe that GGG is back on the menu going by recent statements from Canelo. In the second fight Golovkin really gave Canelo a battering, and the fact that Canelo took the gift and ran (refusing to fight GGG for the trilogy which CANELO'S team was trumpeting about before they began their matches) goes to show that ginger knew how close he was to being defeated. But, now that Golovkin looked bad against a (surprisingly) good Derevyanchenko, he's being talked about again as an opponent by Canelo. It proves that ginger was hoping for an old and beatable version of GGG.

Let's not forget that there was a point where DAZN wanted GGG/Canelo 3 and Canelo point blank refused. He'd rather have fought Kovalev than Golovkin. When Kovalev continued with the Yarde fight, Canelo had no dance partner other than Golovkin that was acceptable to DAZN. But he rather chose to fight NOBODY than Golovkin. :couch:

Now that GGG is looking vulnerable, Canelo has caught a whiff of that sexy old man smell and he's game for the trilogy :ohno

Agree. However, current, retired Ward, might well excite the ped cheat.
