...with good, solid punches,'n ,for the most part, none of his other opponents were able to land as many?
most guys who fight him r one dimensional. cotto mixes it up. plus i think the weight affected him. he was a lot slower and sluggish
Feints, a solid jab, a varied arsenal, a proper low center of gravity while weaving towards the inside, and good pressure-fighting footwork. Cotto is a complete fighter, and Mayweather's last few opponents had either lacked technical dimension or the physical ability to find success.
They took it to the ropes, and Cotto(e) has swarmer skills. Have a significant size advantage didn't hurt either. All the guys (Castillo, DLH, Cotto(e)) who managed to have some success with the Floyd on the ropes strategy were bigger.
Damn, Cotto didn't do much until the 6th round. He only really started having success when he did the conventional, bully Mayweather to the ropes and throw everything, type approach. That's why he gassed 3 rounds later.
Floyd and his boy were mocking Cotto in the build up..Floyd's footwork was pretty average at best. But his upper body game was brilliant in most parts.
Confidence. Sure I believe in styles making fights, but when you have a stubborn, unfazed, confident, lundeterred fighter, the fighter will make the extra effort. Cotto did his best at refusing to let Floyd impose his will and fight Floyds fight. Cotto had trouble defending Floyds right hands, hardly threw any uppercuts, and hardly any right hooks, the punch almost floored Floyd vs Mosley and Judah.
His jab was a big factor. It's heavy and deceptively quick. He timed it very well too and was able to, at times, effect Floyd's rhythm. Despite not being particularly quick, Cotto showed excellent footwork and a real aptitude for cutting off the ring and not giving Floyd a lot of room to operate. When the fight went to the ropes, Miguel didn't fall into the trap a lot of fighters do - get over-excited and wing body-shots and hooks. He stayed calm and tried to pick shots, aiming wherever he saw an opening. Despite clearly losing, I thought he carried out a sound gameplan admirably well. Don't see how he could've done much better.
Coming back to quote you as I promised yesterday. Floyd won, but it was competitive and dare I say it - exciting. :bart
Right, he didn't smother his own offense. This was a point I kept making beforehand; get work in, but don't rush into shots or fall into repeated holds. I was surprised that for the first 3 rounds, Cotto was competing evenly with Mayweather in the center.
