Why was Dempsey so vulnerable to being hit with a right hand?

This was the first true gut laugh I have had in weeks. Thank you, sir.

A defensive revelation I received while sparring for the first time:

Keeping any hand down, for any extended period of time, makes you easier to get him in the face.

 

sometimes yes sometimes no. hands down and your punches can come up "out of nowhere" and it makes you more offensively dangerous,..and sometimes a good offensive is a good defense. also hands low and you seem to be more fluid, can slip better.....a low guard has its good point and bad point.

 

Seems means an illusion.

Fluidity and head movement is in the waist, the shoulders, and the neck. It can work the same way with the hands up.

If they aint up and you make a mistake, you get hit in the face. That is never the desired outcome.

 

sounds rational, but i know from my experience that when i bob and weave i can do it faster and more fluid with my hands down. I am not saying if the risk ever out weighs the reward, but i do feel a difference.

 

That's a confidence thing. It's common when you're young. While being comfortable is a good thing, and it should be encouraged at the early stages of your career, you want to make sure you can tighten up when the opponent is more dangerous.

Don't wait till you fight a puncher

I can't talk a ton of mess, I do it sometimes myself, but usually its to draw a certain punch for a counter, or because my arms feel like cinderblocks in water.

Even Sergio Martinez gets hit more than his trainers would like!

 

Because he came in square on with his hands down looking for the left hook without a jab. He was very left hook happy and wanted to brawl. A counter right specialised is going to give him allot of problems

 

I think it's was more that he just fought the way he fought? Every fighter fights differently its a matter of how you approach a fight mentally I suppose? Is it not? When I watch Dempsey against Willard he looks nervous an itchy as hell and is using a lot of movements and ducks and changes of direction he would risk staying still for a second and looked a little in awe of the size of Big Jess and I assume consequently when he did decide to go for it he made sure that when he lashed out he was going to make sure he badly hurt Willard so he couldn't recover - Willard basically wasnt gunna catch Dempsey with anything that day coz Dempsey wasnt going to allow it - where as against Firpo I think Dempsey looked like he thought he didn't have much to worry about because Firpo was much cruder and inexperienced and just came charging out headlong into him and those were some heavy digs to the ribs that Firpo hit Dempsey sides with - plus sometimes when a guy is in there takin them punches can be deceivingly difficult to get away from (for instance I'm thinkin how baffled Archie Moore was about how he just couldn't get away from Marciano's looping overhand right) but like others have said I think people need to listen to the people who actually fought him in the ring to get a real idea about how easy it was to tag him clean to be honest and if one of IMO the top sharp shooters and most accurate punchers of all time gene Tunney says he was very hard to hit clean with anything then I'd hazard a guess that he was very hard to hit

 

I'll admit I was pretty shocked at how easily and constantly Carpentier hit Dempsey with his right hand. Maybe it's because Dempsey was not in his peak years anymore.

Anyway, at least he could take those punches and still win

 

Yes Carpentier had one of the fastest and accurate right hands in history. Hands down...He flattened heavyweight Bomb.Billy Wells twice, HWT Joe Beckett in 1rd, Battling Levinsky, Ted Kid Lewis and 50 more opponents with that laser right hand...
Jack Dempsey was asked by promoter Tex Rickard before the fight in Dempsey's dressing room to " don't ko him early, give the crowd some rounds". Well after Jack was nailed with a terrific right hand that flattened many of Carpentiers opponents,Dempsey went to work battering the body
with vicious digs and kod Carpentier pronto...
Dempsey NEVER used the "rope-a-dope, but tore into his man...A real fighter...

 

Well, I agree that Dempsey was susceptible to a right hand; at the same time, it was hard to actually get on Jack's chin.


As for the low hands, maybe it was bad habit, but maybe Dempsey like a low left so he could draw rights and return the left to the body? I'm just speculating, though.

 

Suggest those on here who are young and totally misinformed really sit down and watch Dempsey fight. Read what those who saw him from ringside thought about his abilities. Ignore comments from fans but listen to what the experts said about him. Tell everyone how all these very well respected people who stated Dempsey was a fighter with all time great abilities were all wrong and you are right. Arcel stated Dempsey was right up there with Louis and Ali. He saw all three live from ringside and is considered one of the greatest trainers who ever lived. As you watch Dempsey you will over time see how uncommon a talent he actually was.
