The most shocking thing is how he lost like that to two old men.
His reflexes slowed so much it didn't even take young super fast guys to expose the decline. Just a couple of well preserved fighters his own age.

Tarver didn’t turn pro until 28/29 though. He’d only had about 23 fights before he fought Roy. He was fresh.

You’re right about Johnson, but that probably wouldn’t have played out like that had Tarver not gotten to him first. Although it was only a matter of time in my opinion.

He had like 300 am fights, broke his jaw and ribs in a fight, and used to smoke crack.

I started watching Jones / Toney. Roy was tremendous in that fight. Crazy reflexes. I was curious to see the 2nd Tarver fight after that. Hadn’t seen it in years. Watching the Toney fight & the Tarver fight back to back really showed how much Roy had lost. The bounce in his legs was really gone. The punching technique was the same but Roy could get off so many more punches against Toney. He was WILLING to throw so many more punches against Toney. I just think Roy’s skills had diminished quite a bit & Tarver exposed that. Roy didn’t have the most sound technical skills to fall back on so flaws were easier to exploit. I am surprised how the losses keep piling up. I guess he needed to walk away but kept trying to go out on top.
