Walcott wasn't much more popular than Charles ,[if any,]neither were considered anything but adequate, workmanlike stop- gaps after Louis. Their comparatively recent elevation is in direct contrast to how they were evaluated in their active years. Below two who suffered in the shadow of more popular men. This content is protected
I think Walcott was more popular than Charles to be honest. The whole rags to riches thing made a good story.
It didn't help Ezzard Charles that he was the immediate successor to Joe Louis as the world heavyweight champion, which is similar to a coach or a manager trying to fill the shoes of a legendary figure. - Chuck Johnston
After he killed that guy in the ring he developed a more boring style, and he followed a hero like Joe Louis. In few fights he reverted to his old form (The Marciano fight) and against Archie Moore in one bout, when he was on verge of being ko;d, he got aggressive and ko'd Moore. If he had less boing stye he would have been more popular, but not as popular as Louis.
Too damn good boring or otherwise.Harold Johnson also suffered from this stigma. p4p Mr Charles is top 5 on my list
The man was a genius and the men he fought and beat are amongst the best ever.he got 2 out of 2 against Burley and went one better against Archie Moore
