http://www.***********.com/harry-greb-big-ones-grunt-harder-p1--5303 edit: dunno why the link is coming out like that, the place where the asterix are, type in b o x i n g s c e n e without the spaces. This documents various stages of Harry's life including what I found most interesting, his disagreements with the press. New York did not like him. It hints at his wanting to fight for the HW title being unpopular with the NY press. It also documents Greb's feelings on Tunney who Greb accused of being in with the comission and the ref of one of their fights favouring him. Ray Arcel's story on Greb was also quite interesting. Anyway, I found it a very good read, a lot of info on the mysterious Harry Greb not known before. To those who know more about Greb, why did the NY press dislike Greb so much, what was the problem between the two? Also, is it possible that footage of Greb does not exist because he was so disliked? New York was the biggest place in boxing at the time, Dempsey went there with Kearns twice so he could be noticed for bigger fights when he was young. It was THE place of boxing. Is this the reason why Greb has no film today and has so little known about him?
The NY boxing writers made it clear giving them $$$$ would benefit things tremendously. His response was pure Harry Greb fury and a vendetta was born. He tried everything including the my real name is actually Greb spelled backwards Berg. Nothing worked.
What drew me to it was the simple fact that it was the only book on Greb. This was long before the net.
do you think that because the boxing writers did not like Greb, it has afftected the availability of his fight films in any way? even now the net doesnt have a whole lot on him. im still waiting on klompton's book for a good view on greb's life.
Bman, Who is to say if Greb was "dis-liked "more than other non New Yorkers ? He was considered by most accounts the best fighter of his times P4P. Harry Greb was a tough, independant fighter who gave no quarter, and asked for none. By most accounts he was tough for a referee, for his perpetual motion style gave them no rest. His opponents never wanted any part of that " seven year itch ",as he was described. And one other thing. IT IS LONELY AT THE TOP,and envy plays a part. But Tunney his great and bigger rival, was a GREAt admirer of Harry, and was a pallbearer at his funeral. That gesture says a lot.Better to be respected than loved...
I hate to think the *******s had the power to do that. Greb/Walker was shown all over NYC and state. Beyond their reach it would seem. It was very perishable film, needed to be stored like a mink coat.
Slakka is correct. The story that Gene and Greb were friends is pretty overblown. They had a mutual, even grudging, respect for one another. Thats about as far as their friendship extended. Gene understood the power of self promotion and media as well or better than anyone else before or since and used this whenever possible, such as being a pallbearer for Greb while continuing to diminish Greb's accomplishments against Gene at every turn. Just weeks before he died Greb launched an angry tirade against Gene in the press for Gene's published accounts of their fights. His family continued to rail against Tunney for the way Tunney repeatedly portrayed Greb throughout his life to his own glorification. I think its safe to say there was no real love lost between Greb and Tunney.
You might be correct K. I am not saying there was love on Tunney's part, but "respect", for Tunney's fabled rival, might have played a role in his being a pallbearer,at his great rival's untimely death...But we will never know for sure!
