Fighting bigger guys. Hearns defense was his offense. When his power and reach weren't enough to keep a guy off him, he was vulnerable. This naturally happened more often against bigger guys.

It really was dependent on the style he faced, irregardless of how big the opponent was or what weight division at which the fight occurred.

Kinchen and Barkley came right at him and got inside where they could do damage.

Andries was too crude and couldn't get inside. Same with Roldan, although he did rock Hearns briefly.

Leonard had trouble getting inside, except on a few occasions, when he did pummel Hearns, but couldn't finish him.

Hill and Shuler tried to outjab Hearns from the outside and was beaten by Hearn's jab, which then opened up Hearn's arsenal.

Hill was one of the biggest guys Hearns faced, and Hearns won fairly easily.

As is usually the case, It was about styles.

    No.

Ayala was much smaller and less proven than Barkley.

Hearns would have had tremendous physical advantages against Ayala.

Hearns would have landed the jab and caught the onrushing Ayala with straight rights.

And they would have fought at Hearns' best weight 154 lbs in Hearns' prime.

Hearns by mid rounds tko or ko.

Totally agree. Well put, Saad. I think Tommy would have chopped Tony up. Obviously Ayala's only hope would have been to land a home run shot.

Part of it moving up and facing bigger dudes, and I am sure the Hagler beating took something out of him.

He had 163 amateur fights beginning when he was 10 years old and ending when he was 18. And they didn't wear headguards then, and they didn't stop fights quickly.

That's a lot of blows to the head while your brain is still developing.

It catches up to people. And it catches up to some faster than others.

Like SheenLantern said, boxing is hard.

If their careers had aligned, that would've been something.

Hearns could not resist brawling. If you wanted to brawl with him he would always oblige. Same goes for boxing if you wanted to box he would box with you

Hearns showed some late career greatness in the way that he exposed Virgil Hill as more or less a fraud. A product of fighting in his hometown and network executives. Tommy was on cruise control. He beat him with the left hand.
He did a good public service. Otherwise we would of had to learn all about Bizmark, South Dakota. The things that go on in South Dakota need to stay up there. Tommy Hearns did that for us.
