Why was Hopkins beating Trinidad considered such a big win for Hopkins?

You must be either VERY young and with NO historical perspective of the sport or a BRIT Calzaghe nuthugger............

Hmmmmm, let me do this SLOWLY:
    1. Tito was 40-0, 3 Division Champion
    2. Just Defeated the OTHER Middleweight champion the fight PREVIOUS
    3. P4P #2 at the WORST on most lists
    4. Being compared to Sugar Ray Robinson by Larry "GRUMPY" Merchant for his punching power/prowess at the lower weights
    5. IF you were into the sport at the time, you wouldn't ask such a silly question......

NO ONE ever questions Calzaghe's masterpiece over Jeff Lacy......Why the Hate????????????

Now if I beat a guy whos undeafeated and considered the best in the world, I would consider it a BIG DEAL:hey

Wright got credit as far as I know, but in typical Wright fashion, never seems to get the spotlight. It didn't help that Tito was inactive and retired immediately after.

Well, aside from the De La Hoya fight, Tito looked pretty unstoppable. And there is no shame in that, Oscar was a great fighter. He had looked very comfortable in moving up in weight and there was no indication to suggest otherwise. On top of that, he was massive favourite. It's easy to look back in hindsight and say that he was too small, but there wasnt many who said that at the time. Winky deserves a lot of credit, he was an immense fighter and it was an immense performance. I suppose Hopkins just eradicated the Trinidad mystique.

I can only guess you weren't watching boxing then. A lot of things seem less impressive when you can look back on it. Nobody cared about Hopkins at that time and everyone cared about Trinidad. It was a foregone conclusion that Trinidad was going to be fight Roy Jones after he killed Hopkins.

    There you go.
Hopkins put on a clinic in that fight. Brilliant display of skill: offense, defense, ring generalship. Systematically broke Tito down.

I think a few posters have summed up pretty well why Hopkins win over Tito was so big. The reason Wrights fight isn't looked at with the same admiration is mainly because Tito didn't have all the hype he had when going against Hopkins (he had been retired for a while and came back to beat punching bag Mayorga), and looked pretty bad all the way from the weigh in to the fight against Wright (looking sluggish and slow).

I don't want to take anything away from Winky because he fought the fight of his life and nullifide Tito better than anyone in history, but Trinidad didn't look to have any speed or snap in his punches either, so it's seems a little unfortunate for Winky. But still Wright got a ton of credit for the way he beat Trinidad, and was rewarded with a few fights on HBO, including a shot at the MW Champ in Jermain Taylor (he could've also gotten a rematch he wouldn've probably won if he wouldn't have gotten so greedy) and a fight with BHop himself (although at a very bad weight for him).

Tito looked to get even better after the DLH fight..... Another thing Bhop only fought once at LHW before Trinidad.

well trinidad was big favourite and had smashed joppy worse than anyone to date has done.

he was also a p4p star and tipped for bigger things.

hopkins was considered old and not on that level.

Even though Tito was the smaller guy, he still was whooping ass, ending careers as he carried weight to higher weight divisions. His lost to Hopkins was huge and even an upset. Hopkins was relatively unknown and that victory made him a star.
